Job Description

Job Duties
Under general direction of the Clinical Veterinarian or the Manager of Research Support, perform paraveterinary & technical health care functions of the campus wide animal care and use program. Major duties include campus animal health surveillance, clinical and diagnostic laboratory services, investigator services & procedures training, and animal conditioning and quarantine, plus oversight of the Large Animal Surgical Program.

Job Qualifications
Ability to recognize signs and abnormalities in behavior of laboratory animals that indicate disease. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with people with varying degrees of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff. Ability to lift animals up to 50 pounds. Skill in administering oral (including gavage) and parenteral (ID, SQ, IM, IV, ID, IP) medications including fluids to different species. Skill in handling and restraining laboratory animals. Skill in the collection of animal body fluids, urine, blood and knowledge in sample submission. Knowledge of principles of anesthesia administration, maintenance, monitoring and recovery. And, skill in the operational aspect of an inhalation gas machine. Skill in medical procedures including treatment administration and follow up, post-operative care, and bandaging. Skill in preparing and sterilizing instrument packs. Knowledge of weights and measures to accurately calculate doses and concentrations. Ability to follow Universal Precautions and other safety procedures as necessary. Bachelors in science or RVT 5 year experience, OR High School diploma LATG 8 years experience in laboratory animal field.
