Job Description

Job Duties
Under the supervision of the Manager of Research Support and the Clinical Veterinarian, provide a wide variety of paraveterinary health care duties that are directly related to all animal research conducted at UCLA. Major duties include campus animal health programs, investigator services & procedures training, clinical and laboratory management, and animal conditioning & quarantine. Make daily veterinary health surveillance tours throughout all animal facilities as designated by the Manager and/or Clinical Veterinarian. Report any health problems and facility or husbandry deficiencies to the appropriate Veterinarian or supervisor and document as needed. Collect samples for clinical laboratory tests from various animal housing areas to insure an ongoing veterinary health program. Make weekend rounds and treatments as necessary. Assist with the training of animal care staff. Assist the Veterinarians in assessment, restraint, and treatment of all sick animals in the clinic and/or examination areas throughout the campus. Prepare animals for surgery by inducing anesthesia, both inhalants and injectables and follow-up with post-operative care. Perform necessary treatments and procedures for all species in acclimation/quarantine.

Job Qualifications
Ability to recognize abnormalities in behavior of laboratory animals and signs that indicate disease. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with people of varying degree of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff. Ability to lift animals up to 50 pounds. Skill in administering oral (including gavage) and parenteral (ID, SQ, IM, IV, ID, IP) medications including fluids to different species. Skill in handling and restraining laboratory animals. Skill in the collection of animal body fluids, urine, blood and knowledge in sample submission. Skill in medical procedures including treatment administration and follow up, post-operative care, and bandaging. Skill in teaching and assess proficiency of personnel conducting biomedical procedures including animal handling, restraint, oral and parenteral administration of substances, specimen collection, aseptic technique, and/or surgery. Bachelor in science or RVT + 3 years of experience in similar positions; or, High school diploma + LAT AALAS Certification + 5 years of experience in similar positions.
