Job Description

Job Duties
Under the supervision of Drs. Henning and Yang the incumbent will assist in processing of human specimen and the performance of mouse studies. The main duties are 1) Receiving and processing of specimen from human intervention studies and samples provided by collaborators. Blood, urine and fecal samples will be transferred into freezer vials for storage in the -80ºC freezers and DNA will be extracted for microbiome analysis; 2) Maintenance of mice, assisting in harvesting tissues and performing molecular biology procedures to determine gene and protein expression in mouse tissues; 3) Participation in keeping sample inventories, in laboratory maintenance such as waste management, assists in maintaining instruments and freezers in the laboratories.

Job Qualifications
One year of laboratory experience. Basic laboratory skills including, knowledge of a variety of molecular and biochemical, laboratory techniques, including PCR, Western blot and ELISA assays. Sound background in chemistry and biological sciences. Strong interest in nutritional phytochemical research. Highly motivated to learn new skills and techniques. Capacity for organizing data with attention to detail Ability to follow university policy and procedures Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Willing to work with inexperienced UCLA undergraduate students in the laboratory. Ability to operate computer to include word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, data base maintenance (Excel, MS Word, etc.) Ability to work independently following instructions, and work cooperatively with other staff members. Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff. Skills to obtain or convey clear information at various organizational levels. Ability to maintain confidentiality of data. Ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds in a friendly and effective manner. Willing to work with clinical samples. Ability to shift priorities and adapt to changes. Skill in written communication to compose routine correspondence.
