Job Description

Responsible for developmentally appropriate psychological preparation for surgery and medical procedures for pediatric patients and children of adult patients at the Orthopedic Institute for Children (OIC). Facilitate developmentally appropriate play, patient education, diversional activities, and family support. Engage pediatric patients and families in developmentally appropriate activities to support coping and compliance during hospitalization/procedures. Document clinical services in electronic medical record, and participate in departmental customer service and performance improvement projects.
A minimum of 5 years" experience as a paid Child Life Specialist is strongly preferred for Specialist 1 and required for Specialist 2. Child Life Specialists are required to have a Bachelor"s in Child Development, Child Life or closely related field. Master"s degree preferred. Must have taken and passed a CL specific course, taught by a CCLS, in order to obtain certification. Child Life internship required. Passing score on Child Life Certification Exam required within one year of hire. Experience working with children in typical settings is required. Experience working with children in a healthcare setting is required. Skills in assessment and relationship building are required. Must operate computer, telephone, fax and copy machines. Must have basic computer knowledge and word processing skills. Must carry pager/VoIP phone during normal work hours and respond in a timely manner. Must have basic knowledge to operate and maintain equipment for patient distraction and entertainment.
