TWO RIVERS YMCA - Internship Program


The internship program at the Two Rivers YMCA is designed to give the student a professional experience in his/her major area. The internship will be coordinated through the college or university internship program representative.


Eligible students will be final semester/quarter undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited degree program of health education or other related discipline.

Application & Selection Process

Any interested student should attach a Letter of Interest and an updated resume to in the cover letter and resume upload section.

Upon receipt of the above, a formal internship application packet will be sent directly to the student.

If selected the applicant will be required to undergo a background check and all other pre-employment screen before an official offer of an internship can be made.


The student intern is integrated into a variety of program areas depending on her/his background, interests and university requirements. Following an initial orientation/training, all student interns are required to submit formal goals and objectives for approval by both the university and internship supervisors. As part of these responsibilities, the student must identify and complete one major project.

The student intern will report to the supervisor and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled weekly meetings. As part of the planned experience, students are given direct programming responsibilities to include budgeting, public relation/promotions, registration, program evaluation, staff training and other duties. Specific examples of possible student internship responsibilities have been detailed below.

Once a student has accepted and begins her/his internship, the student is obligated to complete the requirement of the program as outlined by her/his school and the Two Rivers YMCA. The intern must represent the YMCA in a professional manner accomplishing duties with pride and enthusiasm. The YMCA welcomes and encourages input from the student and will provide a variety of experiences from which to learn.

The YMCA reserves the right to terminate an internship should action be deemed necessary.


Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek out and secure additional certifications in the areas of health program facilitation, health screening and others prior to formally applying for consideration. CPR/AED for infant, child and adult is required. Classes are offered through the YMCA if needed.

Compensation & Benefits

The YMCA provides reimbursements for any authorized travel and parking will be made available at no cost to the student. A YMCA membership will also be included during the internship. The intern may receive an hourly wage for some hours worked where they take the place of a paid staff member if the university allows.


Membership & Marketing

The opportunity to be involved in general YMCA operations involving membership (membership sales, building tours, special events, scheduling of staff, and volunteer recruitment): marketing (development of brochures, newsletters, flyers, etc., newspaper articles and press releases): Requirements-General knowledge of computers, customer service and a special interest in healthy lifestyles.


Qualified students will be given the opportunity to be involved in the ground level of development in youth/adult programming at the Two Rivers YMCA. Duties will include adult league organization and supervision (volleyball, racquetball): Youth league scheduling and organization (flag football, basketball, soccer, t-ball, track/cross-country, tumbling, dance, rowing, golf, pickle ball, racquetball). Other duties will include organizing and implementing a special event and involvement in projects such as development of marketing, budgeting and program curriculum.


Qualified students will be given the opportunity to gain valuable and practical experience in this area. Depending on the applicants interests and educational background, the student may become involved in several areas to include: exercise class leadership, fitness assessment and exercise prescription, lifestyle counseling, health education, program planning and administration and special event facilitation. Opportunities will also be available in the areas of program promotion and marketing, public relations and public speaking.


Qualified students will be given the opportunity to help in the development of established programs and assist in the creation of new programs. Duties will include involvement with staff selection, orientation and evaluation, pool maintenance and mechanical operations as well as program and brochure development, special event coordination, supervision of instructional programs. Depending upon the applicants interests, education background and certifications, the student intern may become involved in instruction of swim classes and aquatic exercise.

Preschool Programs

Qualified students will be given the opportunity to help in the development of established programs and provide assistance and leadership to staff. Implement new ideas into programs and improve the quality. Current programs include; nursery, pre-school sports, pre-school gym/pool programs, tumbling and other specialty programs.

Preschool (Ages 2-5)

Qualified students will be given the opportunity to supervise children in the day care center. Duties will include curriculum planning, creating new activities, and leading group activities.

School Age (Grades K-8)

Qualified students will be given the opportunity to create and supervise programs for elementary students. Duties will include program planning, creating new activities, and leading programs. Current programs include; Before & After School Care, Schools Out Club, and Summer Camp.


Qualified students will be given the opportunity to help in the development of established programs and assist in the introduction of new programs. Duties include; creating and implementing special teen events, supervising teen activity nights and advising teen groups. Current programs include; Y Winners, Y Solutions, Youth Enrichment Initiative and a variety of special events.
