Job Description

CHIEF OF POLICE Sylvania Township is seeking candidates for the position of Police Chief. Located in Lucas County Ohio, Sylvania Township has a population of approximately 48,000 and covers 21 square miles. The police department consists of 42 uniformed officers, 13 dispatchers, and 5 administrative support staff, totaling 60 staff members. The Police Department budget for calendar year 2017 is approximately 8 million. This position is in command of the entire operation of the Police Department to ensure the prompt, professional, and courteous delivery of law enforcement services to the community. The Police Chief is responsible for the development of the department’s budget and expenditures and the creation of departmental rules and regulations. The Chief reports directly to the Township Administrator and will maintain an active presence in the community. The Minimum qualifications include: •Current OPOTA - Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate and a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police administration, business or related field. •Ten years’ experience in law enforcement, with three years’ progressive supervisory and administrative experience in a command position in a mid-sized police department. •Experience in budgeting, staffing, and policy development and labor relations and negotiations. The ideal candidate for the position of Chief of Police will: •Be a proven leader, committed to the growth and development of the Department. •Possess sound judgment in evaluating situations and in decision making. •Have knowledge and experience with current community policing practices and procedures. •Project a “command presence” and with proven managerial skills for the implementation and enforcement of policies and directives. •Have demonstrated ability to maintain an effective working relationship with employees, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public. •Possess an outgoing personality, with the ability to be approachable and accessible with staff, township residents, and business and governmental leaders. •Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. •Be available on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. •Have the ability to work with sensitive and confidential information, and possess a demonstrated high level of integrity.
