Job Description

Responsible for management of various pharmacy service areas including all outpatient pharmacies, and specialty pharmacy services. Responsibilities include management of day to day operations; process or program design, improvement, implementation and maintenance; financial and human resource management; strategic planning; and quality assessment and improvement. Continually evaluates progress toward objectives and maintains efficient and effective day-to-day operations.

1. PLANNING - Provides meaningful input to directors, vice presidents and

executive leadership engaged in strategic planning activities. Analyzes

environmental issues as well as quality and financial data in order to

assist in developing systematic plans for achievement of goals. Adapts

goals and plans to provide response to the environment and successfully

meet challenging, but achievable goals.

2. PHARMACY SERVICE - Ensure that pharmacy service meet the needs of

internal and external stakeholders. Acts as a key contact person for

nursing, medical, and other professional staff. Serves as a resource for

employee decision making and develops individuals for pharmacy

leadership positions. Develops and implements strategies to improve

stakeholder satisfaction. Participates in inter- and intradepartmental

meetings, committees, and task forces as required.

3. PHARMACY COMPLIANCE - Ensure compliance to all state/federal

regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies pertaining to medication

management processes. This includes: A. Maintaining an awareness of

current regulations and standards which effects pharmaceutical

operations throughout LUHS. B. Identifying areas of risk and implements

activities to reduce exposure to noncompliance. C. Ensuring that

variances are documented, investigated, and resolved. D. Effectively

collaborating with professional staff (ie. medical, nursing, and pharmacy)

to develop, implement, and monitor quality improvement projects.

4. PHARMACY SYSTEMS - Facilitate the development, implementation, and

maintenance of systems that promote positive patient outcomes through

the use of safe, cost-effective drug therapies. Work with the

Administrative Director of Pharmacy Services to improve pharmacy

processes, systems, and budgetary performance.

5. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT - In collaboration with clinical leadership,

assists in establishing standards and strategic initiatives for quality

patient care which focus on a goal of positive patient outcomes.

Routinely measures and monitors the well-being of assigned patient

population; creates and manages processes which contribute to continual

performance improvement. Actively supports and promotes the Lean

journey within areas of responsibility. Ensures that assigned units meet

or exceed regulatory requirements established by The Joint Commission

(TJC), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), The Centers for

Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other licensing/accrediting


6. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT - Assists in the development of annual budget

to ensure appropriate allocation of resources to support operations and

meet departmental goals. Manages operational budget including

revenue, expenses, staff levels and capital equipment sufficient to meet

current and projected patient volume or service requirements.

7. ORGANIZING RESOURCES - Assists with implementation and maintains

systems and functions to achieve organizational objectives and maximize

efficiency of departmental operations. Recruits, interviews and selects

staff in collaboration with Human Resources and ensures that staffing

guidelines/standards are maintained in accordance with patient care

and/or departmental requirements. Maintains appropriate measurements

of quality and productivity to evaluate systems and staffing. Assists with

development and implementation of policies and

management/operational structures to ensure continuous quality care,

patient access, customer service excellence and enhanced profitability.

8. TEAM BUILDING - Fosters positive team collaboration and staff

development to facilitate efficient operations, employee engagement and

achievement of patient quality/safety/satisfaction or customer service

excellence goals. Oversees human resource functions including

recruitment, training and performance management to maintain the

highest quality workforce. Establishes and maintains effective relations

with internal and external contacts.

9. COMMUNICATION - Provides effective communication to administration,

faculty, management and staff to establish collaborative communication

and understanding of the organization mission and strategic goals

necessary to achieve operational goals. Meets regularly with other

departments and direct reports to facilitate communication, goal setting

and decision making. Represents organization to the public and

healthcare communities, regulatory agencies, media and government.

10. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Actively engages in professional

development to maintain current skills and knowledge of environmental

trends, clinical developments/best practices and business opportunities.

Minimum Education:

Required: Bachelors Degree

Preferred: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

Specify Degree(s): Pharmacy; Masters in Pharmacy Administration or MBA in addition to clinical

pharmacy education is preferred.

Residency: Pharmacy Practice - General is preferred

Minimum Experience:

Required: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience

Preferred: 6-10 years of previous job-related experience

Managerial Experience: 1-2 years


Required: Registered Pharmacist


ACLS (Advanced Cardio Life Support Certified)

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
