Job Description

The Farm Operations Manager is responsible for the operations of the Farm at St. Joe's related to crop production, farmers market, internship program, and volunteer program.


* Manages the annual planning and implementation of year-round sustainable crop production to support the Farms' weekly farmers market; Farm Share program; Produce-to-Patients program; and education activities. Includes crop planning, material purchase and management, pest management, soil management, harvesting, working with 2- and 4-wheel tractor, and post-harvest handling.
* Manages and grows the internship program to provide a rigorous learning environment for college and graduate students.
* Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions in the region, coordinate with hospital administration to manage onboarding and contracts, develop and implement innovative place-based curricula, and overseeing students during their internships.
* Manages the volunteer program at the Farm, including advertising, onboarding, day-to-day supervision and communication, and record-keeping.
* Position is responsible for safety of volunteers while at the Farm and for providing a meaningful, educational experience for community members of all backgrounds and abilities.
* Manages the weekly farmers market.
* Coordinates with local farms to provide a positive, engaging opportunity for customers to buy more local produce.
* Works with Washtenaw County Health Department to support the Prescription for Health program.
* Coordinates development and execution of supplemental educational programming and engagement for market patrons.
* Delivers youth programming such as field trips, summer camp, and after-school programs in an engaging and respectful manner, in coordination with Education Coordinator.
* Designs, creates, and maintains spaces at Farm to promote youth engagement and education, including crops planted specifically for use in youth education programming, in coordination with Education Coordinator.
* Designs, creates, and maintains spaces at Farm to promote engagement and education of visitors.
* Promote efficacy of programming and production through data collection and evaluation.
* Maintain facilities and equipment for safety and ease of use.
* Create and implement food safety plan and GAP certification.
* Plan and execute at least one public event per calendar year.
* Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for events and other duties.
* Clearly communicates The Farm's mission and vision to all visitors and program participants through both verbal and written communication.
* Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships.
* Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.
* Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
* Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health.
* Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
* Behaves in accordance with the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMH.
* Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.


Performs other duties as assigned.


* Requires a Bachelor's degree preferably in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Education, or other related field. Also acceptable: combination of at least 4 years of commensurate work experience and education in areas listed above.
* Experience with managing agricultural programs
* Preferred 2+ years of experience with youth education, intern or volunteer coordination


* Ability to work nights and weekends as required.
* Schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday
* Demonstrated leadership ability to coordinate volunteers and give oversight and direction.
* Demonstrated ability to successfully create and implement an annual crop production plan and soil management program. Sustainable or organic production methods required.
* Proven ability to understand and utilize Windows-based software packages including Microsoft Office.
* Ability to design and implement curricula for college and graduate students.
* Experience with sales and marketing for successful management of the farmers market.
* Knowledge and demonstrated experience in equipment maintenance and basic mechanical systems.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong cultural competency for promotion of inclusive and diverse community
* Ability to work outdoors in all seasons in a physically active role
