Under direct supervision, the Lab/X-Ray Tech is responsible for performing radiologic procedures as scheduled by physicians and for conducting routine lab tests used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. POSITION PURPOSE

Under direct supervision, the Lab/X-Ray Tech is responsible for performing radiologic procedures as scheduled by physicians and for conducting routine lab tests used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

2.

Receives, collects, identifies, and labels specimens.

3.

Draws blood from patient for blood lab tests.

4.

Conducts tests for evaluating individual health problems.

5.

Charts results of lab done in-house into the patient's chart. Maintains logbook in lab.

6.

Records lab tests sent to referral lab in log book; prepares specimen for shipment, records results when test is returned on patient's chart, place on doctor's desk for review.

7.

Maintains logbook for pathology tissues sent to referral lab.

8.

Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments. Cleans work area. Performs quality control and maintenance.

9.

Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains.

10.

Orders supplies as necessary.

11.

Prepares patients for radiologic procedures. Takes X-rays following established procedures for patient care and safety.

12.

Uses a variety of radiation protection and shielding materials.

13.

Insures equipment is in working order. Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.

14.

Logs radiologic procedures completed. Processes routine paper work. Types and files reports as requested.

15.

Develops and processes radiologic film.

16.

Orders film and other supplies as necessary.

17.

Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.

18.

Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in services.

19.

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Mercy and Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

20.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Mercy and Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

21.

Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and Mercy business.

22.

Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)

23.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation required. Associate degree with courses in chemistry, biology, or related fields. Completion of course in radiologic technology approved by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. A minimum of two years of experience in medical laboratory. Limited license for radiology required. Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change. May be requested to travel within the Siouxland region. When assigned to travel, a valid drivers license and proof of insurance will be submitted to manager prior to travel. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Requires lifting of 50 or more pounds. Able to perform effectively under stressful situations. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, such as inclement weather, dust, noise, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, and infectious disease.
