Maintains and operates all instruments and measuring devices along with the associated equipment needed to complete different types of survey-work assignments.


General Duties & Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.


  1. Operates the equipment necessary to collect information in an accurate manner and locate points in the proper location for accurate mapping practices.
  2. Prepares and maintains survey notes to company standards or verbal instructions.
  3. Can operate the following equipment: Differential and Digital Levels, Total Stations (EDM) both Manual and Robotic Units, Data collector, Laser Scanners and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers units.
  4. Marks measuring points with keel (marking crayon), paint sticks, scratches, tacks, or stakes.
  5. Places stakes and monuments at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation.
  6. Cuts and clears brush and trees from line of sight during general survey operations.
  7. Ability to memorize up to 300 point codes and control codes. Understand the process of using linking codes to establish line work in the field for post process purposes.
  8. Understanding of how field and office CADD software will analyze field gathered input.
  9. Ability to enter storm pipes and inlets; use tools such as shovels, sledgehammer, pick, cutting tools, and power tools.


Supervisory Responsibilities - Must be capable of running crew with Registered Land Surveyors guidance.

Education/Experience – This position requires 3 -8 years related experience or training required. Expectations of taking General Survey Classes are recommended.


Language Ability - Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Handwriting skills need to legible and neat in appearance for field notes.


Math Ability – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and calculate traverse lines and general differential level runs. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word software and Internet software.


Certificates and Licenses – None required, Certified Survey Technician Certification Level 1 and or Level 2 is recommended.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts by roadway, major highway and rail traffic, working in timber and brush areas and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.  Frequently required to travel for extended periods of time.


Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.  The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and drive a motor vehicle.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus of survey instrumentation.
