General Information

Reporting to the Big Sky Area Manager, the Mechanical Technician provides technical skills to ensure all compressor mechanical systems and equipment are effectively maintained and safely operated in accordance with our standards of performance, policies and procedures. This position will report to the Princess compressor station, Hussar compressor station, or Medicine Hat office. The main responsibilities of this role will be to maintain TransCanada assets as part of the team that maintains the Big Sky compressor stations and valve/valve works.  The successful candidate must reside in Drumhellar, Brooks, or Medicine Hat.


* This position is overtime eligible and will be part of an on-call rotating schedule and provide emergency support, as required.

* Regular work schedule for this position will be:


  • Week 1 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is an 8 hour / day
  • Week 2 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is a Regular Day Off (RDO)


Please note that hours/days of work may need to be extended as business needs arise.

The successful candidates will be required to travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve overnight stays away from home.


* This position is eligible for domestic relocation assistance, but is not eligible for cross-border relocation assistance.



  • Independently perform installation, testing, repair and maintenance on compressor station equipment and other facilities relevant to the pipeline system, as required;
  • Verify and order required materials/parts to ensure materials are available;
  • Perform routine and major maintenance on reciprocating associated auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, generators, cooling fans, etc;
  • Perform maintenance on valves and valve actuators(manual and pneumatic driven);
  • Perform Facilities and Pipeline work as required;
  • Perform emergency repairs to meet customer and client needs;
  • Oversee the safe and efficient completion of projects;
  • Take active control of contractors;
  • Ensure facilities and personnel comply with TransCanada's safety, health, environment and risk standards;
  • Procure resources and manage within budgets for the facilities;
  • Provide support to our business partners, as required;
  • Work extended hours as well as out of town requirements for regional needs;
  • Complete other tasks as required.


Qualifications and Education


  • Proven experience with motor/pump installation, maintenance, pump alignment, and diagnosis;
  • Maintain aerial coolers, belts, bearings, fans etc;
  • Maintain lube oil coolers, air compressors, pumps etc;
  • Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrable effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven ability to work effectively alone and in a team environment.



  • Possess valid millwright or heavy duty mechanical accreditation;
  • Experienced with the interpretation of technical reference documents;
  • Minimum 6 to 8 years of oil & gas experience is preferred;
  • SAP experience would be considered an asset.


Physical Requirements

This position requires manual dexterity and visual acuity as well as the ability to:

  • Lift, pull, push, and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of physical force;
  • Stand, walk, kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods of time;
  • Twist head and back for extended periods of time;
  • Work in areas classified as confined space;
  • Climb and work from ladders, catwalks, staging, and platforms; 
  • Ascend and descend slopes and ditches;
  • Work with hands above head;
  • Work lying on back;
  • Work in adverse weather and/or extreme temperature conditions.


*This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (record) for review;
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol testing;
  • Travel from home base, as required;
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings, or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home.
