General Information

 

Reporting to the Northern Lakes Area Manager, this position requires specialized technical skills to ensure all compressor control systems and equipment are effectively maintained and safely operated in accordance with TransCanada’s standards of performance, policies, and procedures.

 

This position is overtime eligible.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Troubleshoot AC and DC electrical circuits, generally to the board level.  Inspect, calibrate, and maintain varied electrical and pneumatic instrumentation on natural gas compressor units, valves, pumps, air compressors, and other associated equipment used in natural gas compression;
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems utilizing technical reference manuals, drawings, and other documents;
  • Use of specialized tools such as Hart Communicator, Fluke, Megger, Etc;
  • Troubleshoot and maintain PLC hardware and associated automation components;
  • Perform technical analysis to prepare recommendations for future action;
  • Multi-skilled maintenance support to other technicians in the completion of pipeline, compressor control systems, and gas measurement activities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and perform mechanical maintenance activities, including routine corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, equipment and system improvements, and major maintenance projects;
  • Troubleshoot, operate, and maintain gas-fired turbine engines, reciprocating engines and gas compressors, standby generators, pumps, low pressure and steam boilers, oil coolers, air compressors, cooler fans, valves & operators, and other associated electrical equipment used in natural gas compression;
  • Manage encroachments on pipeline right-of-way;
  • Other tasks as required.

 

Qualifications and Education

 

Qualifications

  • Qualified or able to qualify in DOT Operator Qualifications, and to advance individual skills as assigned/required by team within defined deadlines;
  • Perform all work utilizing TransCanada safety procedures;
  • Safety skills, strong safety attitude, and environmental responsibility;
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills typically required for the maintenance of compressor control systems. 
  • Competent in the use of test equipment applicable to the maintenance of control systems;
  • Competent in interpreting technical reference documents;
  • Basic knowledge of engine mechanical skills and aptitude;
  • Computer skills such as E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, or related software;
  • Subject to call out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and extended workdays and/or workweeks for emergency response purposes;
  • Will be required to carry a cell phone, to work a rotating on-call schedule;
  • Active Control of contractors. (Monitor contractor activity);
  • Must be a team player with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Must be a self-starter, capable of working with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, effective written and verbal communication, as well as interpersonal skills to work in a collaborative team environment that includes shared responsibilities, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others, to support team and company objectives, and willingness to work in all areas i.e. controls, pipeline, and measurement.

 

Education / Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Associates degree including courses in engine maintenance, electricity/electronics preferred. (Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education).
  • Experience with Allen Bradley and/or Bristol controls is desired;
  • Experience in Electrical Instrumentation and Controls or background (pneumatic and electronic valves, transmitters, switches, and regulators) are an asset.

 

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license;
  • Provide a driver’s abstract for review;
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening including drug and alcohol testing;
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings, or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home.
