Looking to expand your mining career?  Join the SunHills Mining team at the Highvale Mine, Canada’s largest surface strip coal mine managed and operated by SunHills Mining Limited partnership (LP), a TransAlta entity.  The Highvale Mine is located about 80 km west of Edmonton near Lake Wabamun and fuels three coal-fired plants operated by TransAlta.


SunHills Mining LP is currently seeking Foreman, Drainage and Utilities positions. We are seeking proactive, well-organized, individuals who will provide supervisory leadership of operational staff for the Drainage and Utilities team at Highvale Mine. Key focus is on utilizing continuous improvement in the implementation of best in class work planning, scheduling and completion, while maintaining regulatory and legal requirements in accordance with drilling and blasting specifications.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include a wide range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the organization and direction of all operations activities in their assigned area that establishes a high level of production in a cost effective, safe and in accordance with all environment statutes’.
  • Establishes a positive employee and labour relations climate by conducting and participating in activities that contribute to an effective working relationship with all employees both non-union and union.
  • Builds the credibility of the team, obtains the required resources and gains support for the team’s activities. Demonstrates an appreciation for the individual and team dynamics at play and the impact that members of the team have on one another.
  • Establish a high level of satisfaction for both internal and external customers by achieving safety, production, quality and cost standards. Displays a cooperative attitude in all customer matters.
  • Is committed to personal Continuous development and able to assume the duties and responsibilities of other managerial and supervisory personnel as required.
  • Adapt to changing conditions and assume other duties and responsibilities, as required, in response to changing circumstances and the physical and economic environment of the Mine and the Company.
  • Responsible for developing an effective production team.  This includes the evaluation, selection and mentoring candidates selected for the skills, enthusiasm, knowledge and team building skills expected.
  • Develop, enforce and promote constant process improvement opportunities amongst team members.
  • Support all management goals and objectives through effective goal roll down practices.



  •   5 – 8 years of progressive leadership related to operational employees
  • Understand and apply the policies, procedures and the collective bargaining agreement
  • Basic mine operational knowledge
  • Specific detailed knowledge of operations practices & standards
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications
  • Detailed knowledge of the work management process.
  • Capable of leading a project team engaged in the resolution of complex issues and/or providing subject matter guidance related to area of specialization to project team members
  • Capable of identifying and solving problems that arise with little or no precedent
  • Collaboration skills working with peers and cross functional teams
  • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada
