Position Summary:

 

Provides leadership and direction to the environment team at TransAlta Alberta Coal Operations to ensure that power plant and mine operations are conducted in accordance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, company policies and procedures, and industry best practices. 

 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Implements a 3 - 12 month business plan to meet business requirements. This includes the continuous improvement of core business processes.
  • Selects, develops and leads a high-performance team to achieve expected results.  This includes delegating appropriate deliverables to direct reports and holding them accountable for delivery.
  • Maintains effective working relationships across Coal Operations, supporting business goals and proactively facilitating resolution of cross-discipline issues. 
  • Develops and maintains an environmental management system aligned with ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Accountable for compliance with all provincial and federal environmental regulations, approvals and authorizations. This includes monitoring regulatory developments and the proactive identification and resolution of any regulatory issues. 
  • Develops compliance strategies and prepares and oversees regulatory permit and approval submissions.
  • Accountable for the creation and utilization of systems, processes and procedures that foster a culture of environmental responsibility. 
  • Develops and updates environmental standards and practices. 
  • Prepares emergency management programs and plans and coordinates response to environmental incidents.  Oversees and coordinates environmental incident investigation processes.
  • Develops and manages budgets.
  • Manages environmental consultants ensuring delivery of high quality, cost-effective products. 
  • Identifies & mitigates areas of environmental and regulatory risk.
  • Develops effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create a safe environment for all employees, and perform all work safely and in compliance with TransAlta’s policies, procedures, standards and collective agreements.

 

Required Knowledge and Qualifications:

 

  • Degree in engineering, environmental science or a related field. 
  • Professional designation (P.Eng., RFP, EP, etc.) desirable.
  • 3-5 years experience supervising a diverse range of environmental professionals.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management in a mine, industrial facility or industrial construction environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the power generation sector and experience with air quality regulations and pollution control and monitoring systems is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex environmental issues with regulatory agencies and stakeholders.
  • Experience with implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001 aligned environmental management systems.
  • Thorough awareness and understanding of environmental regulations & industry best practices.
  • Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and with personnel at all levels.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
