Position Summary:


A challenging and exciting opportunity exists for a full time permanent Supervisor, Mechanical Engineering at TransAlta's Keephills Operations Plant, located 75km west of Edmonton in the Duffield area. The successful candidate will provide field based day-to-day engineering technical support to Operations, Maintenance and Project Management teams at Keephills. This position is accountable for ensuring that technical expertise and engineering input is provided into asset operational and maintenance decisions to help achieve operational goals and maintain technical compliance with the applicable internal and external requirements. Develop, implement, and review a 3-12 month business plan and lead the technical support team in the equipment area you are accountable for. 




  • Develop, implement, and review a one year technical support program for engineering support activities in your discipline. This includes ensuring that the program is in alignment with immediate manager business plan, to meet the Keephills plant requirements. This includes delivering agreed results.
  • Develop a strong team of direct reports with required capability to provide day-to-day technical support for Operations, Maintenance and Project Management for the full inventory of power plant equipment and systems in your discipline
  • Provide managerial leadership to direct reports. This includes appropriate delegation, coaching, providing constructive feedback, and supporting direct reports in using judgement and initiative in completing work.  
  • Identify and communicate the resolution of technical issues arising from detrimental operating conditions and equipment conditions
  • Coordinate and perform equipment and system risk assessments and condition assessments for your discipline
  • Coordinate and provide technical support for projects, turnarounds, and forced outages for your discipline.
  • Coordinate and provide technical input into the asset management process to ensure risk assessments and condition assessments inform the Long Range Technical Plan for your discipline
  • Understand and ensure team compliance with the technical documentation management processes and standards
  • Coordinate engineering design work for your discipline
  • Assist with the development and management of the engineering budget


Required Knowledge and Qualifications:


  • B.Sc. in Engineering
  • APEGA P.Eng. status (or eligibility)
  • People leader with 10+ years progressive experience and a minimum 2 years leadership experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in a power generation facility or a large integrated process plant
  • Awareness and understanding of applicable regulations and legislations that apply to the power generation industry in Alberta, including OHS Act, APEGA and AESO
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial/economic assessments and asset life cycle planning
  • Knowledge of equipment risk assessment and condition assessment practices and methodologies
  • Knowledge of the practices and processes associated with project management, project engineering and engineering design in the power generation industry
  • Knowledge of Management of Change practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Awareness and understanding of ABSA’s pressure equipment regulations relating to power boilers and unfired pressure equipment
  • Ability to work across all disciplines, levels, and departments to effectively communicate standards, changes, and improvements
  • Capability to understand and articulate complex technical issues to both a technical and non-technical audience

  • Must apply oneself to all requirements of the position. This includes after hours support and shift and weekend support, as required.
