Grocery Merchandiser

Job Description Summary



Basic Statement of Functions

To assist the store manager in achieving and maintaining product pricing, inventory, buildups, merchandise, store appearance and cleanliness, product dating, outdated merchandise, maintain signage, product promotions, invoicing, cigarette store maintenance, shelf tags, and vender control.


Job Specifications (Qualifications)


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in the area of supervision and retail operations with a strong background in sales and marketing is a plus.



Competent in: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language.  Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.



Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Perform basic math computations at the 12th grade level.



Experience with the following:  MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Experience with corporation specific software PDI a plus.



Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed and uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Ability to operate a ten key calculator with accuracy and speed.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Manager may designate some or all of the essential duties and responsibilities to the Assistant Manager.)

  1. Grocery merchandiser: order product, identify and ensure accurate pricing and maintain inventory.
  1. Order merchandise for the location, using proper buildups.
  2. Check-in vendors, cross checking the order with items received.  Check in items by line number.
  3. Conduct invoice entry and auditing for correct cost and retail.
  4. Put order away once the cross-reference is completed.
  5. Correct and maintain all product pricing, daily if necessary; including down loading of price changes from G-site, cooler pricing, mark ups/downs, white tag items, product tag numbers updated, track updated and discontinued items.
  6. Maintain back stock at a minimum level.
  7. Print price books.
  8. Maintain PLU’s.
  9. Keep product rotated, fresh, and check expiration dates. Remove and discard unauthorized product.
  10. Return guaranteed items.
  1. Maintain displays and signage:
  1. Compile and promote top seller list.
  2. Cross merchandise displays.
  3. Build imaginative displays using all available space.
  4. Set per schematic – aid from vendors.
  5. Maintain proper usage and ordering of all DSD displays, gondola sections, etc.
  6. Maintain correct and complete promo signage – in store and out.  (Reader boards, pump toppers, handle ads, building signage, banners, inside sales, etc.)
  7. Relays of merchandise.
  8. Set up extra Ad items.
  1. Keep the counter, shelves and stocked areas neat and clean.
  2. Maintain cigarette store: including ads, merchandise, compliance contracts, product dating, etc.



  1. Train store employees on grocery merchandiser duties as directed by the store manager.
  2. Perform all cashier duties as described in the cashier job description.
