Job Description

The Miami Herald is looking for three reporters to work as real-time sports reporters, who will be responsible for writing, compiling and/or producing lightning-fast stories and posts about breaking news that is driving the conversation online – or will be driving it a few minutes from now. It could be the latest big development in the recruiting wars, which football coach was fired or which athlete was in Miami partying overnight.

Responsibilities:

With readers starting their day early as they scroll for sports news on their phones and tablets, our sports team is starting earlier, too.

In May, McClatchy assembled an early real-time sports reporting team to give more urgency to trending and interesting stories in the southeast region, specifically focusing on SEC football. And now, we are expanding that team to include ACC football and other national trending stories.

The job requires a demonstrated commitment to fairness and accuracy, in fact, and in tone, and a strong grounding in journalism ethics. And like all journalists at the Herald, you must demonstrate the desire and skills to build audience loyalty and engagement.

You are expected to not only to have the ability to build sources and ferret out facts, but frame, write, produce and promote a story via search and social media to ensure that it reaches and resonates with our readers. It will require a demonstrated commitment to change -- to constantly adapting to the ever-evolving ways in which readers seek out and interact with journalism. And it will require enthusiastic participation in ongoing conversations about what’s working and what’s not -- and an equally enthusiastic commitment to adapting accordingly.

Candidates must have at least one year of experience working for a sports website or newspaper.

Scheduled days and hours may vary and could include early mornings, nights and weekends.

Some travel may occasionally be required.
