Job Description

Job Summary

Perform independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Prepare proposals for funding agencies, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.

Major/Essential Duties of Job

Duties are specifically related to research activities, require an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning (especially Microbiology and Infectious Diseases), are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgement. Duties may include, but are not limited to: *Specific duties related to research activities including: 1) care and use of BSL2 bacterial pathogens, 2) creating bacterial mutant strains, 3) expression and purification of bacterial proteins, 4) bioinformatics related to bacterial genomics, 5) growth and use of human cell lines. *Independent research activities including: 1) design and execution of required experiments, 2) writing manuscripts, 3) presenting at scientific meetings both within and outside the university, 4) contributing to grant writing and other funding related efforts. *Supervision of research staff, undergraduate and graduate students.

Occasional Duties

Design, plan, conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of routine research; keep detailed records of data. Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results Summarize results for inclusion in scientific and clientele oriented publications. Prepare and write proposals to funding agencies; maintain financial accounts related to research projects. Supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research. Install, operate and/or repair research equipment. Other duties as required.

Required Education and Experience

BS degree in Biology, Genetics or related field and two years experience in genomics or molecular biology.

Preferred Education and Experience

BS degree in Biology, Genetics or related field and three years experience in genomics or molecular biology or MS degree in Biology, Genetics or related field.

About Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University is the site of a training school for firefighters and the headquarters of Texas Task Force One, a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team. The bonfire rescue effort began immediately as emergency personnel were on the site at the time of the collapse and lasted almost 24 hours. Listening devices and search cameras were used to locate trapped victims. An internal investigation conducted by Texas A&M officials concluded administrative oversight, tunnel vision and poor construction practices contributed to the collapse.
