JOB TITLE: Laboratory Technician Trainee – shift breaker 40 hr week

DEPARTMENT: Operations


This is an entry level Laboratory position that provides oil lab, water lab, and asphalt lab information for QA/QC of refined products. This position will also help with operation support and environmental testing. A wide variety of lab equipment is used, most of which follow ASTM procedures, including GCs, flashes, centrifuges and analyzers. All data is stored in LIMS. The integrity of lab data, testing procedures and adherence to them, and sample collection is critical to master at this level. This position must collect samples for finaling product, some of the samples will be hot, some vaporous; collection is at all times of day and weather conditions. Job often requires you to be on your feet for hours at a time, working to get timely results out. This position interfaces on a daily basis with Oils Planning, Operations, Tank Farm (pipeline, tanks and dock), Engineering, and Environmental.

Base Schedule will be 40 hrs per week Monday - Friday. Overtime should be expected and will be required as this position will cover for technicians in the laboratory.

    1. Collects liquid and gaseous process stream samples from pick up points in Operation Areas, collect final samples from Tank Farm.
    2. Learns to analyze these samples utilizing ASTM methods.
    3. Acquires a working knowledge of the specific methods used to analyze both the product streams and the final product by utilizing SOPs.
    4. Participates in Cross-Check Programs and SQC Programs.
    5. Gains proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and instruments.
    6. Learns how to calibrate analytical instruments and equipment.
    7. Learns to accurately enter analytical data into LIMS to ensure timely dissemination to other departments.
    8. Learns to perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, such as pouring up new sulfur standards on a monthly basis, cleaning up RVP gauges after analyzing crude oils, and calibrating balances every day, or more frequently, if needed.
    9. Becomes proficient in the safe use of laboratory chemicals, including how to access MSDS information as needed.
    10. Leans basics of laboratory safety for working with flammable materials.
    11. Learns Andeavor Safety Program (Work Practices) and Process Safety Management Program including rules regarding Management of Change.
    12. Keeps work area clean.
    13. Performs other duties as assigned.
  1. BASIC Qualifications:

Any combination of EDUCATION and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be comparable to High School or equivalent with two years’ experience in a directly related analytical laboratory environment or twenty semester hours of Chemistry.

The Trainee should have understanding of statistical concepts such as accuracy, precision, and standard deviation.

  1. Experience:

Two years of experience in a directly related analytical or quality control laboratory will substitute for the above EDUCATION. Experience with and understanding of Gas Chromatography, including Simulated Distillation, Thin-Layer Chromatography, Atomic Absorption, and Ultraviolet Fluorescence Analyzers (such as Antek Analyzers) is highly desirable. Familiarity with the operation of: Distillation Apparatus (both Atmospheric and Vacuum), Viscometers, Pour Point Baths, Analytical Balances, and other basic lab equipment. Knowledge of ASTM procedures for: API gravity, specific gravity, viscosity, sulfur, smoke point, freeze point, cloud point, pour point, Reid Vapor Pressure, flash point, distillation, benzene content, carbon residue, ash, cetane index, neutralization number, and octane number would be very helpful. The trainee should be capable of reading an ASTM method and obtaining a basic understanding of the analysis. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, LIMS (particularly Baytech’s BLISS), is very desirable.

  1. Trainee Responsibilities:

The trainee should be familiar with a Laboratory environment. Trainee will be expected to promote safe practices and follow all procedures in the performance of their duties. Trainee will be responsible for informing their supervisor of any problems or anomalies in their procedures which might affect the analytical results. Trainee is responsible for maintaining mental alertness to ensure the safe performance of their duties and to notify supervisor of any unsafe conditions. Trainee must be capable of performing analysis accurately under the pressure of a deadline on a routine basis.

  1. Physical Requirements:

The employee must be able to procure samples from the tank farm and pick locations in process areas; this requires climbing and walking in inclement weather. Employee must stand/walk 6 hours per day during normal shift; up to 8 hours during high load times. Must be able to lift 50lbs. Must be able to handle monotony of daily routine; however will spend a large amount of time in training for further responsibilities.

  1. Additional Skills:

This position requires good, practical problem solving skills.


Trainee will receive training in The Right to Know Law, the use of Material Safety Data Sheets, Incipient Level III Firefighter, 40 hour Refinery Training.


Hazards: the trainee will be working with solvents, laboratory chemicals and reagents, acids, bases, compressed gases, crude oil, H2S, liquefied petroleum gasses, gasoline, naphtha, jet fuels, diesel, fuel oil, Bunker fuel, asphalt, and similar hazardous materials, some of which are flammable and could expose the trainee to fires if not handled properly. The physical environment in the laboratory is usually very good; however, hot testing process, heights, high pressures, pinch point, elevated locations, and flammable materials are all routine exposures in laboratory work. Andeavor is a smoke-free workplace.


The trainee will be supervised directly, usually by a Lab Technician, while learning laboratory practices, procedures, and analytical methods. After the demonstration of efficient and accurate analyses, the trainee will be expected to work with limited supervision on a routine basis.
