Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Anchorage Terminals I&II.

Could be required to work alone on rotating shifts. Be able to record product receipts from the pipeline. Has to be able to make timely valve switches to insure quality control of petroleum products. Has to be able to make minor routine repairs to meters and valves.


  • Working with other Tesoro Terminal personnel and alone when required. Having responsibility for the safe operation of the Terminal operations while on shift.
  • Will be trained to meet the requirements of Person in Charge (PIC) to perform product transfers across the Port of Anchorage fuel dock.
  • Will be trained to starts pumps, observes pressure gauges, and opens valves for receipt and discharge of product.
  • Will obtain knowledge necessary for timely pipeline switches requiring the opening and shutting of valves by hand or by motor operated valve. Insures safe and accurate product transfers both in and out of the terminal in a timely fashion while adhering to established procedures and safety rules, while minimizing contamination between products.
  • Maintain building and grounds in a clean orderly manner. This could among other duties, include janitorial work within the building, plus outside work consisting of painting, weed control, snow removal, etc.
  • Maintain timely and accurate communication interface between terminal activities, pipeline operator and the neighboring terminals.
  • Obtains inventory data by using proper gauging and recording procedures and computes information on the proper forms.
  • This individual will be trained to respond to Terminal emergencies as outlined in the Contingency Manual.
  • Will receive training to obtain product samples and perform gravity conversions.
  • Maintains proper records and provides accurate pass-on to next operator.
  • Will receive training necessary to operate terminal equipment and truck loading rack within their design limitations.
  • Will be trained on Tesoro procedures for preparation of worksites for safe work by recognizing and eliminating hazards.
  • Performs required checks and preventative maintenance of valves, pumps,
  • packings, piping etc. and painting of terminal components and structures as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.


  • Responsibility for Equipment/Materials:

Failure to perform job duties could result in damage to facility equipment and loss of inventory, resulting in significant danger to personnel and the environment. Needs to gain a thorough knowledge of terminal safe operating practices and procedures.

  • Responsibility for Others’ Safety:

Has a high level of responsibility for the safety of others and the Terminal facility.

  • Degree of supervision Received:

As an entry level operator the Terminal Operator III will receive a high degree of supervision and assistance from senior terminal operators.

  • Responsibility for Internal Contacts:

Interface with Pipeline, Terminal I & II and other departments as required or requested.

  • Responsibility for External Contacts:

Frequent contact with Port of Anchorage operations and neighboring terminals regarding product schedules.

  • Mental Effort:

Must remain alert at all times. This position requires concentration and ability to deal with a large complexity of piping and valves. Several activities going on at one time are not uncommon.

  • Physical Effort:

Moderate level of physical effort must be demonstrated on a continuous basis.

  • Job Conditions:

Hazards: Moderate – can be high at times of incidents resulting from abnormal activity or climatic conditions.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent with two to three year’s related experience in terminal operations and/or a petroleum related field.


  • Must be in good physical condition, have correctable 20/20 vision and normal hearing. Requires lifting of up to 50 lbs., walking, climbing ladders/stairs and pushing/pulling. Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


  • Alaska Driver’s License and the ability to drive company-controlled vehicles.
