Job Description

Job Title: Researcher R&D

Location: Swansea

Function: Research & Development – Process Technology Wales

Salary Band and Range:  Negotiable + Benefits

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a function that will shape the future of our industry!

Swansea University and Tata Steel have entered into an agreement whereby they will jointly undertake collaborative research activities at the University and jointly create new research facilities and capabilities within a National Steel Innovation Centre (NSIC). This new Innovation Centre will be hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the businesses of Tata Steel UK and the broader steel sector across the UK.

The shared vision is the creation of an open access Innovation Centre for the entire UK steel sector. The Innovation centre will initially be located at the Universities Singleton campus whilst new “state of the art” facilities are developed in close proximity to the Bay campus. This is a once in a generation opportunity to establish an industry driven Centre that will deliver a globally competitive and innovation focused, 21st Century UK Steel Industry.

The centre will house a new team of high calibre researchers, technologists and industrial experts who aim to transform the UK steel industry into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking with particular specialisms in novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials for creating active building facades.

The role

A new Knowledge Group  is being setup in Wales as part of the Rolling Finishing & Measurement department. The group has a challenging and exciting task. The group will be the  lynchpin between other R&D Knowledge Groups in the Netherlands and Warwick and the operations of Tata Steel in the UK, of which the Port Talbot site is the closest and largest. Furthermore the group will establish, maintain and explore relations with the Swansea university and other relevant universities.

The group will steer implementations of cloneable technology, be involved in improving the process performance and in the flawless operation of the technology implementations. The group will also support the implementation of agreed best practices in Tata Steel Europe as well as collaborate with other departments towards the phase gates of product developments.

What we are looking for

For this group there are multiple positions available and we are looking for people qualified to MSc level or above in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Materials & Mining or other associated discipline. You will have the drive to deliver results, overcome challenges, manage stakeholder expectations and meet deadlines. You will have strong analytical and problem solving capabilities, as well as an ability to develop new ideas into structured, deliverable project proposals and a willingness to develop an understanding of steel processing. An ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team including collaboration with external organisations is essential, as is an interest in technology transfer from R&D to steel plant. You will also have excellent presentation and report writing skills. Experience of using data analysis software (e.g. spotfire) and in programming (e.g. C#, Delphi, Labview, matlab), as well as knowledge of manufacturing processes for steel products would be advantageous.

A willingness to travel to and spend time at our Netherlands sites is essential, as is a full UK driving licence.
