Job Description

Job Title: Researcher, R&D Product Metallurgy

Location: Swansea

Function: Research & Development

Salary:  Negotiable + Benefits

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new venture that will shape the future of our industry!

Tata Steel is one of the world’s top ten steel producers. The combined group has an aggregate crude steel capacity of more than 28 million tonnes and approximately 80,000 employees across four continents. We’re part of the Tata Group, one of the largest, most diverse conglomerates in the world with businesses in the UK including Tata Steel, Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea.

Swansea University and Tata Steel have entered into an agreement whereby they will jointly undertake collaborative research activities at the University and jointly create new research facilities and capabilities within a National Steel Innovation Centre (NSIC). This new Innovation Centre will be hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the businesses of Tata Steel UK and the broader steel sector across the UK.

The shared vision is the creation of an open access Innovation Centre for the entire UK steel sector. The Innovation centre will initially be located at the Universities Singleton campus whilst new “state of the art” facilities are developed in close proximity to the Bay campus. This is a once in a generation opportunity to establish an industry driven Centre that will deliver a globally competitive and innovation focused, 21st Century UK Steel Industry.

The centre will house a new team of high calibre researchers, technologists and industrial experts who aim to transform the UK steel industry into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking with particular specialisms in novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials for creating active building facades.

The Role

As a result of this exciting new venture, we are currently recruiting within our Research & Development (R&D) function to support the NSIC. We are looking to recruit a Researcher within the Materials Design Department to work with project teams on various product and process development activities.

Working under the Knowledge Group Leader, you will lead the execution of the research project activities and determine and specify research methods and required equipment. You will monitor the progress and quality of research activities and find solutions for setbacks as well as identify opportunities for initiating new relevant research projects for Tata Steel and our customers. You will secure Tata Steel intellectual property positions by publishing patents, and maintain Tata Steel’s reputation as innovative knowledge leader by publishing scientific and technical papers.

The role involves laboratory preparation as well as manufacture of test samples and contributing to the characterisation and performance assessment of laboratory and line produced materials. You will have direct contact with internal/external customers and suppliers, including external research organisations.

There will be a requirement to travel to, and work at Tata Steel manufacturing facilities to conduct or assist trials

What we are looking for?

We are looking for an individual with knowledge and/ or experience of steel metallurgy, steel products, including their manufacturing processes, markets and application. Applicants will be qualified at least to Degree level in Metallurgy, Materials Science or associated discipline, with successful implementation as well as practical laboratory experience.  Intellectual creativity, strong communication and presentation skills are essential as well as team working skills and a commitment to health & safety.

A full UK driving licence is desirable as well as a willingness to travel to other sites.
