Job Description

Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeships

The role of mechanical craftsperson can vary greatly, depending on the plant and location of your department. Daily activities range from planned and preventative maintenance to fault finding and problem solving when things go wrong, ensuring the plant and its manufacturing units perform to their maximum. Structured training will enable you to work on a large variety of mechanical equipment from large cranes, heavy machinery (e.g. gearboxes, pumps, bearings), to complex hydraulic equipment or machining components in our Engineering workshops. A mechanical craftsperson needs to be flexible, knowledgeable and highly motivated.

 

Requirements:

If you have (or are expecting to achieve) 5 GCSEs or equivalent (including English, Maths and Science) at C Grade or better, you can apply to join our Enhanced Engineering Programme.

 

If you join the programme Tata Steel will sponsor you while you work towards an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations with a Level 3 Engineering Qualification at a local college. Your first year is 100% college based and if you successfully complete this you will become a paid Tata Apprentice in year two.

Mechanical Programme Summary:

Year 1

As a Tata Sponsored College student you will achieve:

  • Enhanced Engineering Programme (previously Pathways to Apprenticeships);
  • FE/ HE Academic Engineering Qualification (e.g. Level 3 Diploma);
  • NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations;
  • Essential skills x 5 (Application of Number, Communication, IT, Working with Others & Improve own learning)

 

 

Year 2

As a Paid Tata Apprentice you will:

  • continue to study either an FE or HE Academic Engineering Qualification (e.g. Level 3 Diploma or progress onto HNC);
  • start your NVQ Level 3 Qualification.
  • undertake further training courses and projects.

 

Year 3

In your third year, you will:

  • have the opportunity to apply to study for either an FE or HE Academic Engineering Qualification (e.g. Level 3 Diploma or progress onto HNC);
  • continue with your NVQ Level 3 Qualification.
  • undertake further training courses and projects.

 

Year 4

In the final year of your apprenticeship you will:

  • complete your Academic Engineering Qualification (if appropriate)
  • complete your NVQ Level 3 Qualification.
  • undertake a practical trade test and interview to confirm that you would meet Tata Steel’s high levels of knowledge & skills.

  • Year 1 Salary = Unpaid College Study
  • Year 2 Salary = £12,340
