Job Description

Coding Manager

Job Description:

This is a key leadership position in Health Information Services. Must be able to work onsite at least 50% of time and as needed (upon completion of training).

Job summary:

  • Supervises the day to day responsibilities of the coding team.
  • Evaluates staffing to meet expected productivity metrics.
  • Monitors the DNFB and communicates issues in timely manner.
  • Performs focused audits and education for new staff along with periodic audits of all staff to ensure accuracy of coding, modifier assignment, sequencing and DRG assignment.
  • Monitors staff responses to NCCI Edits and efficient system utilization. Tracks educational offerings and ensures education is provided to meet the needs of team.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are reviewed revised appropriately to ensure compliant coding activities.
  • Oversees coding operations of the secondary departments we support to ensure healthy revenue cycle for each facility.
  • Participates in and initiates Bright Ideas and Performance Improvement activities, where appropriate.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on coding effectively communicating and/or providing education to hospital staff, physicians and their offices as well as other members of the Revenue Cycle Team.
  • Assists the Director with strategic planning, budgeting, evaluating technology and staffing needs of the department.

Job Requirements:
Qualifications:

1. Minimum HIM Associates degree with RHIA or RHIT in active AHIMA status.

2. Minimum of 3-5 years supervisory experience.

3. Minimum of 3-5 years ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding experience.

4. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.

5. Clinical Documentation Integrity experience preferred.

6. Provider Based Coding experience preferred.

7. Knowledge of 3M 360 Encompass solutions with computer assisted coding highly preferred.

Physical requirements:

1. Able to speak clearly and distinctly with staff, physicians, patients and other hospital employees.

2. Able to extensively utilize telephone for communication.

3. Demonstrates adequate stamina to deal with stressful situations and to complete the necessary work schedule.

4. Able to sit/stand for extended periods of time throughout the work schedule with some lifting and bending.

5. Demonstrates adequate vision for reading current literature and preparing written documents. Must be able to distinguish colors. 6. Fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination to operate business office machines.

Job relationships:

1. Reports to the Director of Health Information Services.

2. Works directly with subordinates, physicians and other employees of the hospital.

3. Must always present a positive attitude and team approach to departmental issues.

4. Contributes a helpful attitude to physicians and other employees of the hospital.
