The Department of Licensing is looking for an experienced legal professional to join our Hearings Examiner team!

We are committed to providing due process to drivers subject to license cancelations, suspensions and revocations. Cases are high volume and randomly assigned to the team. Common legal issues reviewed include the legality of DUI arrests, fraudulent applications for driver's licenses and financial responsibility after an uninsured traffic accident.

We are looking for an experienced attorney with strong legal writing skills, who is able to draft clear, concise, legally sound decisions and who enjoys working independently with little oversight. They must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable dealing efficiently and effectively with a diverse clientele.

Required Qualifications

Applicants who possess the following qualifications may be referred to the hiring manager:

* License to practice law in the state of Washington.
* Two years of experience from any of the following categories (this includes experience working as a Rule 9 intern).
* An adjudicator of claims, OR
* Full time member of a regulatory board or commission which hears contested cases, OR
* Prosecuting or defending criminal cases, OR
* Representing plaintiffs/defendants in civil trials or hearings.


* Two years of experience writing legal briefs, rulings, and decisions, and communicating official legal opinions and procedures.
* One year of experience conducting legal research using electronic tools, analyzing relevant law, and applying the law to the facts.
* One year of experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, other software programs, and legal research tools.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants who also possess the following may receive additional consideration by the hiring manager:

* One year of experience prosecuting and/or defending in DUI trials.
* One year of experience interviewing and questioning witnesses and hearing participants to obtain the most accurate and complete understanding of the facts in a legal proceeding.
* Experience maintaining the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
* Experience with on-line and electronic filing systems.
* Experience using Excel or similar spreadsheet software to input monthly statistics into a prepared workbook
