Job Description

Agency Mission/Vision:

The mission of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) is to collect the revenues required to support the business of the Commonwealth, to make a difference in the lives of children by enforcing the financial responsibilities of parenthood, and to assist Massachusetts cities and towns in sound and efficient fiscal management.

Our vision is to conduct our operations in a manner that inspires public confidence in government by administering and enforcing tax, child support and municipal finance laws in ways that are innovative, customer-focused and transparent. DOR has offices in 13 locations across the state as well as in Chicago and New York.

Summer Internship Program Overview

We seek candidates who are passionate about learning new skills, comfortable with challenges, and eager to see how the compliance with the tax, child support, and municipal finance laws of the Commonwealth positively impact Massachusetts.

Our summer internships run for 8 weeks, from June 2019 - August 2019. Students work up to 37.5 hours a week.

This summer, we have the following internship opportunities within these areas:

* The Tax Division is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing noncompliant taxpayers. The Tax Division audits the tax returns of businesses and individuals filed, including sales/use, meals, rooms occupancy and special fuels, are subject to examination by the Tax Division staff.
* Office of Tax Policy Analysis (OTPA) provides tax revenue forecasts, statistics on the Massachusetts tax system, and estimates the fiscal impact of changes to tax laws and regulations.
* The Child Support Enforcement (CSE) mission is to make a difference in the lives of children by enforcing the financial responsibilities of parenthood. CSE functions are to establish paternity, and establish, enforce and modify child support and health insurance orders.
* The Division of Local Services (DLS) helps Massachusetts cities and towns achieve sound and efficient fiscal management through technical assistance, training and oversight. Its bureaus are responsible for ensuring the fairness and equity of local property taxation, the accuracy and quality of local accounting and treasury management, interpreting state laws that affect local governance, distributing local aid and maintaining a comprehensive databank on local finances.
* The Office of Marketing and Web Services oversees external communication with the general public through the DOR website and social media. Through DOR's Advisory Council, other forums and surveys, the Office of Marketing and Web Services strives to continually connect and engage with the department's many stakeholders - looking to find better ways to interact, while honestly sharing ideas and concerns. The Office of Marketing and Web Services is also responsible for tax forms development, notice revisions and internal communications through DORNET.
* Administrative Affairs which includes the following:
* The Revenue Accounting Unit (RAU) is responsible for recording, reconciling, and reporting on all DOR receipts including tax and non-tax collections.
* The Office of Labor Relations works with all units of the Department to address labor and employment matters in order to promote effective working relationships and ensure the accomplishment of the Department's objectives.
* Risk Management Foster the efficient achievement of the mission and goals of the Agency and its operations and to promote ethical behavior and compliance with mandates and policies in order to support the Agency in providing quality services to the public.
* The Human Resources Bureau administers all personnel matters for DOR and ANF IT employees, and is responsible for maintaining personnel records, reviewing and monitoring transactions related to the payroll systems (LCM and HR/CMS), and overseeing all DOR employment matters.
* The Office of Facilities Management (OFM) is responsible for the acquisition of leased office space, property management, interior design and space planning services. OFM is also responsible for mailroom operations at the Saltonstall Building. Records Management Unit (RMU) is a separate operating unit within OFM and responsible for managing DOR's vast inventory of records.



Preferred Qualifications:

Please note that specific internships may require different degrees/experience.

* Pursuing Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Affairs, and other related degrees.
* Excellent listening, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
* Results-oriented, with keen attention to details
* High degree of organizational skills and problem solving ability
* Ability to learn new concepts and technologies quickly and independently
* General computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
