To collect and record tolls received for the passage of vehicular traffic over a toll bridge.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Supervision Received:

General from a Bridge Toll Collector Supervisor 1 or Bridge Toll Collector Supervisor 2.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

Department of Transportation and Development, MRBA and other state operated bridges.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Cashier by full responsibility for enforcing vehicular traffic restrictions as well as collecting tolls for passage.

Differs from Bridge Toll Collector Supervisor by lack of supervisory responsibility.

Examples of Work

Classifies types of vehicles and informs motorist of fee.

Collects fee, makes change where necessary, and records fee according to class on register. Gives receipt when requested.

Refuses admission to vehicular traffic not permitted on bridge. Refers vehicles carrying inflammable or hazardous cargo to Bridge Toll Collector Supervisor for inspection and transportation under controlled conditions.

Enforces restrictions relative to hitch-hiking, boarding or alighting from vehicles on bridge plaza. Reports in fractions to supervisor.

Directs traffic to another lane when necessary because of breakdowns or vehicles requiring inspection in assigned land.

Furnishes information relative to location of streets and highways in vicinity of bridge.

Records information necessary to report short change claims not notifies Bridge Toll Collector Supervisor.

Examines bills and coins received. Detects where possible mutilated, counterfeit or foreign money. Prepares report covering receipt of such money through error.

Prepares daily occurrence report to cover unusual and emergent situations occurring during tour of duty.

Counts cash received and makes deposit slip for delivery to Accounting Department.

In emergencies may drive fire truck, operate two-way radio, give first-aid treatment.
