About Governor's Summer Internship Program:

The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor's Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

About the Job:

To assist the Senior Scoping Engineer in obtaining and assessing data in the effort of identifying roadway segments that require drainage improvements for inclusion in the In-house recommendations performed through the Maintenance & Operations Department or through the Capital Program. The results of this project will help protect the pavement structure of our roadway system, help to ensure the design life of future applied roadway treatments and improve the safety of the travelling public.

A Day in the Life:

* Drainage Improvements Project
* Coordinate with maintenance personnel to help indentify drainage concerns within their respective units within the Crawfordsville District (ditching, shoulder clipping, pipe repairs or replacement, debris removal and other)
* Perform field work with maintenance personell to GPS locate the drainage problem, describe the issue and document the area with photographs - this will be perform using the Collector App or like software program using a tablet
* Assess what work is to be done and when it should be programmed for in-house maintenance work or as a Capital project
* Prepare a table summarizing the locations, concerns and priority of work to be completed in the upcoming maintenance program and future Call for Projects.
* Provide map (ArcGIS) of results

Parameters and support will be provided by the Senior Scoping Engineer to accomplish above tasks.

What You'll Need For Success:

Possess a valid driver's license. Be physically able to perform work in the field including but not limited to measuring features of the site parameters, taking photographs, recording notes and assisting the pavement engineer / maintenance personnel. Input / transfer data into an Excel spreadsheet for organization and compatibility with mapping software.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

Difficulty of Work:

Requires applicant to have the ability to define problems, collect data and catalogue results. Collate and classify information and data. Possess good customer service and communication skills.


To collect and organize the necessary data, as guided by the Senior Scoping Engineer, accurately for use in the future planning of Maintenance activities and Capital projects.
