The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor's Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. The hourly wage is $11.30.

Pavement & Bridge Asset Management Engineer Intern

Successful applicant will be immersed in a positive, fast-paced working environment that will provide an excellent learning experience in the field of Civil Engineering. The Engineering Intern will provide engineering assistance to a team of registered professional engineers and staff engineers who are instrumental in maintaining the infrastructure quality and safety by identifying the culvert, road and bridge asset needs for the LaPorte District of INDOT. Work performed by the successful applicant as a member of the Asset Management Team will serve as a catalyst to develop successful infrastructure construction projects by providing the building blocks and essential information needed to transform engineering concepts into reality.


* Assist in gathering pavement patching information in the field and preparation of patching tables
* Assist asset team by preparing, gathering, and organizing project assessment documentation; such as mini-scopes, cost estimates, maps, project scoring, supporting data, and spreadsheets
* Attend field checks to verify current condition, validate design plans or scope the project for bridges, roads, culverts and safety projects
* Assist in obtaining field data for potential and active projects including photos, condition information, sizing of elements, and verification of prior assessments
* Research and provide answers for designers, project managers and construction related to infrastructure assets
* Attend pre-final inspections to verify construction is complete
* Assist with Maintenance Work Plans
* Be exposed to ArcGIS mapping, culvert hydraulics, pavement design, bridge rehabilitation, road and bridge construction and asset management on a state DOT level
* Organize pavement data for Pavement Engineer
* Assist asset engineer with hydraulic field surveys of small & large culverts
* Become familiar with the pavement coring process and assist with scheduling cores
* Assist with investigating complaints and issues generated thru the public for drainage and other issues.

Preferred Experience:

Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

* An individual who is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field;
* Experience and/or familiarity with using both computers and tablets, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), GIS (ArcGIS), Adobe Acrobat, and various internet applications;
* Experience and/or familiarity with highway and bridge infrastructure - design, construction, assessment, hydraulics, etc.;
* Comfortable working both indoors in an office setting and outdoors in all weather conditions. Working outdoors will require working next to traffic and on steep slopes. Safety equipment will be provided and is required;
* Disposition for maintaining and keeping information and schedules organized;
* Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license, ability to drive a vehicle is required.
