The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor's Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

In addition, our internships are designed to allow interns to work in a hands-on environment with current INDOT managers and leaders, allowing them to develop their communication and leadership skills.

Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for performing construction inspection, which includes assisting the Project Engineer / Supervisor / Construction Project Manager in documentation, inspection of work, and other related tasks. This position will shadow the construction personnel onsite and will be responsible for checking construction activities for State compliance, interpreting plans and specifications, and working with survey crews. Preparation of daily activities and documenting work operations will need to be performed.

Responsibilities:

* Complies with INDOT safety policies and procedures,
* Performs work assigned by the project engineer / supervisor / construction project manager, ensuring that the tests, measurements, and inspections are completed and recorded in a timely manner,
* Ensure required inspections are completed in a timely manner and are reported,
* Ensure work conforms with appropriate plans, specifications, procedures, and policies,
* Provides feedback to project engineer / supervisor / construction project manager on construction operations,
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:

Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

* Enrolled in an ABET accredited university's Civil Engineering or related program.
* Considerable knowledge in use of computer, CADD & drafting equipment;
* Basic Knowledge of civil engineering technology;
* Ability to understand civil engineering technology; use statistical analysis; comprehend & interpret plans & specifications to design standard plans; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; handle routine & sensitive contacts with public, government officials & property owners concerning assigned projects.
* Detail Oriented.
* Valid driver's license.

Physical Effort:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform other physical activities such as: stooping, standing, walking for long periods of time, dragging, bending, and/or waving. When working outside, may work in inclement weather, heat and cold while performing physical activities such as going up and down slopes.

Working Conditions:

Travel to and from work site. May be exposed to unpleasant weather conditions and high temperatures. May be required to work flexible hours based on project schedules.

Difficulty of Work:

Work performed can vary from routine to high degree of difficulty. The work requires specialized knowledge of civil engineering, roadway, cost estimating. Employee works within established guidelines. Employee exercises judgment and decision making regarding district design engineering work. Work is carried out under the specifications and guidelines based on established policies and procedures.
