The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor's Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

Job Description:

A design engineer with Capital Program Management develops and produces plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in house road and/or bridge projects in a timely manner.


* Develops and reviews detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance design plans for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the office; independently conducts studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs and recommends changes based on findings regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects;
* Render directions and explanations of various plans for use by Contractors;
* Assists supervisor in feasibility studies, including cost analysis and presenting plans to District for approval;
* Generates standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software and manual drafting techniques. These drawings may involve: drainage, traffic maintenance, traffic control, general roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals, landscaping or lighting;
* Calculates and summarizes plan quantities; including pavement calculations, earthwork and seeding quantities;
* Consults with central office involving design plans or projects;
* Develops preliminary and detailed design roadway and/or bridge projects;
* Uses CADD equipment for Bridge and Road plans;
* Operates state vehicle to travel to projects to conduct field work or reviews, when necessary;
* Keeps abreast of current CADD, computer publications, reading reports, attending Technology and design practices by reviewing trade conferences and participating in training seminars;
* Assists with special projects and other duties as assigned

Preferred Experience:

Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

* Enrolled/graduated in/with B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school;
* Must possess valid Indiana driver's license.
* Knowledge of civil engineering; employee training and development; supervisory principles and techniques.
* Knowledge in use of computer, CADD and drafting equipment.
* Ability to comprehend and interpret variety of civil engineering principles, techniques, procedures, criteria, plans and specifications and related data; define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid engineering/technical conclusions; use statistical analysis;
* Ability to cooperate with coworkers on group projects and establish a friendly atmosphere with coworkers.
* Ability to handle routine and sensitive contacts with governmental officials, consulting firms, contractors and the general public.
* Ability to plan and develop engineering projects with unique or controversial problems and/or novel engineering related concepts and approaches;
* Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
