Job Description

Job Description:

This position generates standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) with MicroStation software, confers with higher level engineers and technicians to perform standard engineering design (e.g. culvers, traffic maintenance, traffic control and general roadway) and develops and produces plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house Partial 3R and maintenance projects.

Responsibilities:

* Generates standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Draftin (MicroStation) software and manual drafting techniques. These drawings may be full or small size and may involve: drainage, traffic maintenance, traffic control, genetal roadway, structures, right-of-way, signals, landscaping or lighting;
* Calculares and summarizes plan quantities including pavement calculations, eartwork and seeding quantities;
* Confers with higher level engineers and technicians to perform standard engineering design (e.g. culvers, traffic maintenance, traffic control and general roadway).
* Reviews design of all necessary changes to projects to ensure that construction methods for all aspects of projects will achieve plan & specification intent;
* Render directions and explanations of various plans for use by contractors;
* Collect existing field condition data using both electronic and conventional methods;
* Interprets and plots base site topography, profiles and cross sections. Prepares sketches;
* Operates state vehicle to travel to projects to conduct field work or field reviews, when necessary;
* Keeps abreast of current computer technology and design practices by reviewing trade publications, reading reports, attending confrences, and participating in training seminars;
* Assists with other projects and performs other duties as assigned;
* Subject to mandatory snow & ice removal activities.

Job Requirements:

* High School diploma or equivalent required;
* Considerable knowledge in use of computer, MicroStation and drafting equipment;
* Basic Knoweledge of civil engineering technology;
* Ability to understand civil engineering technology; use statistical analysys; comprehend & interpret plans & specifications to design standard plans; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; handle routine & sensitive contacts with public, goverment officials & property owners concerninng assigned projects.
* Associate degree in related field;
* Minimum four (4) year experience with CADD/Microstation software;
* 12 mos. exp. in transportation, with experience to be commensurate with position to be fillled or 5 yrs. engineering related technical experience in simple construction / rehabilitation / maintenance projects or planning & design of simple civil engineering projects or materials resting, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled;
* Detail Oriented;
* Ability to obtain Valid Class B CDL;
* Valid Indiana Drivers License.

Difficulty of Work:

Work performed can vary from routine to high degree of difficulty. The work requires specialized knowledge of civil engineering technology, use of statistical analysis, cost estimating, environmental concerns. Employee works within established guidelines. Employee exercises judgment and decision making when on worksite and work. Work is carried out under the specifications and guidelines based on established policies and procedures.

Responsibility:

Established guidelines, practices, and procedures are available, if needed, in order to carry out a wide variety of duties in accordance with general work instruction. Employee is responsible for completion of work and accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated. Questions that may arise are discussed with supervisor.

Personal Work Relationships:

Works with designers, local entities, governmental officials, consulting firms, interagency and interagency coworkers, and the general public.

Physical Effort:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform other physical activities such as: stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time, dragging, bending, and/or waving. When working outside, may work in inclement weather, heat and cold while performing physical activities such as going up and down slopes.

Working Conditions:

May require travel. May be exposed to inclement weather, ongoing traffic, and rotating work shifts. May be on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. May be exposed to unpleasant surroundings including; dead animals, ditches with sewage, loud noise, confined work spaces, double shifts for snow and ice removal, dirt, dust, pollen, and insects/bugs.
