Job Description Benefits Supplemental Questions

Performs entry-level professional work in the handling of a variety of assignments in the Department of Planning and Zoning; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of a more senior level planner. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical and clerical personnel. Position is within the Department's Long Range Planning Division.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Examples of Duties: Performs or assists in the development of studies, analyses, and recommendations in connection with the current and long-range physical, social and economic development of the County;

Gathers, selects, compiles and analyzes data pertaining to characteristics of the area;

Analyzes and summarizes existing conditions, derives conclusions, and develops projections such as for population trends, highway needs, land use, etc.;

Reviews subdivision and site plans;

Manages and reviews applications for rezonings, conditional use permits and Comprehensive Plan Compliance reviews;

Prepares reports and supporting graphic display materials descriptive of research and recommendations;

Explains planning problems and procedures to the general public on inquiry;

Serves as staff assistant to various boards, commissions and committees;

Makes presentations at meetings, including various boards, commission and committees, and other public/community meetings;

Acts as technical advisors, within field of specializations, to other planners with the department;

Provides direction to planning technicians working on similar projects;

Assists with the background research and planning involved in the implementation of Board of Supervisors' 2040 Vision Statement and Strategic Plan priorities, including:

Implementation of "Healthy Growth" strategies, aligning the Comprehensive Plan and zoning with infrastructure improvements

Planning for a new Downtown Stafford, a vibrant cultural and mixed use commercial and residential district;

Tracks the implementation of development proffers; and

Performs related tasks as required.

Typical Qualifications: General knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning; general knowledge of land development and engineering practices; general knowledge of economics, sociology and municipal finance as applied to urban planning; some knowledge of current literatures and recent developments in the field of urban planning; ability to analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical information and to prepare technical reports; ability to prepare and present technical information clearly and in an interesting manner to lay groups and the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues, employees and representatives of other public agencies; ability to plan and supervise the work of technical subordinates.

Supplemental Information: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in urban planning or a related field, and some experience in professional planning work.

Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

About Stafford County

Stafford County Public Schools provides Driver Education instruction that meets all Virginia requirements needed to obtain a Virginia driver's license. Driver Education is taught through tenth grade Health and Physical Education (HPE) and consists of both classroom instruction and behind the wheel instruction. Each of our five high schools has licensed Health, Physical Education and Driver Education teachers who are responsible for the classroom instruction program of Driver Education. Each high school also has on staff two certified Behind the Wheel (BTW) instructors who are responsible for the on-road instruction of Driver Education. Each student is required to complete 36 hours of classroom instruction as well as receive a passing grade for the classroom driver education portion of tenth grade HPE.
