About St Petersburg General Hospital

"St. Petersburg General Hospital is one of the only two in Florida with the super-advanced, 16-slice system from GE Medical Systems. Our hospital's diagnostic facilities have been revamped to house our new equipment," revealed Richard H. Satcher, President and CEO of St. Petersburg General Hospital. According to radiologist, Allan Katz, M.D., the Discovery LS fuses the fastest, most sophisticated Position Emission Tomography (PET) system with the most powerful, advanced Computer Tomography (CT) scanner. "Combining PET and CT quickly gives physicians two pieces of critical information to help them detect, diagnose and determine the best course of cancer treatment," he explained. "It significantly reduces exam time for each procedure, which makes precise diagnosis more comfortable for my patients. It can also mean, better outcomes, especially in the battle with cancer," noted Dr. Katz. "Reducing patient anxiety is a major factor with any medical treatment," agreed oncologist Dr. Anil Raiker, M.D. "The one-step, one-appoinment PET/CT scan significantly reduces the amount of stressful time a patient would normally have to spend on multiple procedures." In a one 30-minute scan, the Discovery LS merges both metabolic and anatomic information into a single, information-packed image. "I believe this scanning capacity delivers the most precise, most accurate, most comprehensive imaging available anywhere today," said Dr. Raiker. The high resolution images can be electronically transferred very quickly to specialists anywhere for immediate review and expert opinion. "This benefits both patient and physician," he explained. "We're very excited about this system and proud to offer it's health benefits to the people of our region, as well as to the medical community," observed Satcher. St. Petersburg General Hospital, established in 1969 at 6500 38th Avenue North, opened its new, $12 million Emergency department in June 2003. Reflecting the hospital's community commitment, it completed restoration to its building in November and on January 19, it introduced valet parking to daytime hours to update and enhance services to better serve the community's healthcare needs," said Satcher.
