Description

Summary: Assists the Pharmacist to ensure safe, optimal and effacious drug therapy for our patients. Assists Pharmacists in entering customer information into the computer and entering & filling physician prescriptions for patients. Responsibilities include greeting customers, taking prescription requests, working at the cash register, answering phones, handling interruptions, maintaining inventory, RX Express, and Nursing home duties. Excellent customer service required. All functions are performed in keeping with continuous quality improvement principles. Works within institutional and departmental policy and procedures. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent

1. Enters and fills physician prescriptions accurately and promptly under supervision of a Pharmacist. 33%

a. Enters customer, insurance, and prescription information into the computer. Calls insurance company if necessary.

b. Fills prescription accurately and efficiently. Familiar with drug names, forms, strengths and storage requirement.

c. Performs basic pharmaceutical calculations when necessary.

d.Supports and complies with established hospital and department policies and procedures.

2.Assists in transactions with other departments, employees, outpatients and inpatients. 24%

a.Effectively handles interruptions in work flow.

b.Answers and triage phone calls.

c.Rings sales on cash register

d. Focus on service and provide excellent customer service.

e.Performs various functions on computer as adjusting charges, dispensing additional medications, reprinting label, etc.

3.Assists pharmacist with record keeping. 3%

a.Maintains narcotic records.

b.Maintains prescription records.

c.Assists in quality control and quality improvement activities.

d. Carries out other clerical duties as required.

e. Performs other duties as assigned.

f. Maintains repackaging records.

g. Maintains a neat, clean, and well stocked work area.

4.Assists with maintenance of stock and inventory as defined by department procedures. 5%

a.Assist in maintaining appropriate stock levels and perpetual inventory.

b.Assists with annual inventory when requested.

c.Assists with cleaning shelves and keeping stock neat and orderly.

d.Checks for outdated medications.

e.Returns credits to inventory.

5. Fills and delivers to Patient Care Areas and Surrey Place. 33%

a. Ability to work RX Express areas efficiently and productively.

b.Fills and delivers Nursing home medications.

6.Maintains and improve job knowledge. 2%

a. Attends departmental meetings.

b.Becomes familiar with policies and procedure and abides by them.

c.Meets competency standards and environmental training.

d.Assists with orientation and training of new employees.

Education

High school graduate or GED equivalent.

Current certificate/license as a pharmacy technician/intern in the State of Missouri.

Experience

Typing, simple math and spelling required. Entry level position but previous experience is preferred. On the job training. Meets annual competency standards. Verbal and cognitive ability are necessary. Speech, hearing and near-visual acuity are essential. Motor coordination and manual dexterity are required.

Working Conditions

Employee is required to occasionally sit and continuously required to stand and walk about the pharmacy and nursing areas as well as to and from various departments. Employee must frequently lift/carry light weight (20#) items and occasionally lift/carry medium weight (50#) items. Employee must frequently reach forward and overhead and must occasionally bend, squat, crawl, kneel, climb, lift from floor to waist and lift from waist to overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation with both hands. Employee is frequently exposed to CRT terminal work. Otherwise employee is exposed to a normal office environment where there is no discomfort due to temperature changes, dust, noise and the like.

The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.
