Job Description


In order to be eligible you must have one of the following:

C.N.A. Certification;

Current Nursing student with completion of nursing fundamentals course within 90 days of employment;

Previous documented work experience as a PCT, Nurse Assistant, EMT or Surgical Tech within the last 3 years or

Successful completion of an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel program within the last 3 years.

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, the Patient Care Technician is responsible for performing non-licensed patient care in accordance with established Nursing Standards and Hospital Policies. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values. This position is a non-licensed/certified staff member authorized to transport and/or stock medications to meet specified essential job duties. This includes staff who do not have the authority to prescribe, dispense and/or administer medications.

Principal Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent

1. Patient Preparation 30%

a. Weighs patient

b. Checks pulses

c. Clips hair at site - groin, wrist or chest dependent on procedure

d. Pulls arterial and venous lines and applies pressure until hemostasis is obtained

e. Obtains vital signs and connects patient to hemodynamic monitors. Monitors vital signs as ordered

f. Provides pre and post instructions to patients and family members

2. Transportation 30%

a. Transports patients to nursing division post procedure and assists with transferring patients to bed

b. Ambulates patients post procedure and pre procedure as needed

c. Transports specimens to lab

3. Performs other patient care activities to include, but not limited to: 15%

a. Passes and collects meal trays and water

b. Assists with ordering meals

c. Venipuncture for blood draws

d. Performs 12 lead ECGs

e. Finger sticks for blood sugars. Maintains daily QC on meter.

f. Discontinues peripheral IVs

4. Responsible for cleaning and re-stocking holding area. 10%

5. Responsible for maintaining cardiac cath forms and assembling cath/ep packets 5%

6. Participates in department patient satisfaction goals 5%

a. Performs patient care rounds on patients at least every 30 minutes

b. Keeps patients and families informed of any delays

c. Transport and/or stock medications.

7. Performs other work duties as assigned 5% TOTAL 100%


High School diploma or equivalent.


If candidate does not meet the following, they may not function in this job role. This may include termination of employee. 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Successful completion of orientation classes as deemed by education. 3. Verbal and cognitive ability. 4. Able to address specific age related needs of the patient. 5. Current certification in a Basic Life Support required or course will need to be completed during orientation classes, prior to working on the nursing divisions. Maintain competency in safe medication handling. COMPETENCY WILL BE VALIDATED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. STANDARDS DENOTING AN ANNUAL OR MORE FREQUENT COMPETENCY VALIDATION ARE LOCATED IN THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE. COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY. PARTICIPATION IN A BLS, IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.

Working Conditions

Employee is required to sit occasionally, stand continuously, and walk frequently. Employee must lift/ carry a light (1-20lbs) medium (21-50lbs) and heavy (50lbs +) load frequently. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs with assistance. Employee is required to bend, squat, crawl, kneel, climb, lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Employee is exposed to blood borne pathogens. Occasionally: 1-33% Frequently: 34-66% Continuously: 67-100% The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties. Job Relationships: Member of a comprehensive healthcare team, including other health care providers, the patient, the patient's family and significant others. Takes direction from: Cath Lab Head Nurse, Registered Nurses Provides direction to: None Supervised by: Head Nurse, Cath Lab CERTAIN JOB DUTIES REQUIRE YEARLY VALIDATION FOR COMPETENCY. YEARLY PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS ON UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS, BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS AND FIRE SAFETY ARE REQUIRED. PARTICIPATION IN A CPR CLASS IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.
