Job Description

St. Joseph Health Vascular Surgery is looking for a motivated surgical physician assistant who would like to assist in the growth and development of a venous business while assisting two active vascular surgeons grow their patient base. The clinic is located in Sonoma County which represents the best of Northern California — premium wine, farm-to-table dining, unique resorts and spas, and over 50 state and regional parks. Breathtaking Highway 1 delights visitors with crashing waves, sea lions and otters sunning on the beaches, and fantastic sunsets that color the sky in brilliant hues. Tasting rooms in the world-class Sonoma wine region range from simple and rustic to elaborate wine castles.

This position provides direct patient care services in the ambulatory, hospital inpatient and outpatient observation settings under the direction of the supervising physician. The Physician Assistant acts as an agent for the supervising physician.  The orders given and tasks performed by a Physician Assistant shall be considered the same as if they had been given and performed by the supervising physician.  Physician Assistants work under a Delegation of Services Agreement and protocols governing performance of procedures and tasks.  Reports to the Chief of Staff and Medical Office Administrator or Manager at the medical office site where services are provided.


Essential Functions:  

  • Take a patient history; perform a physical examination and make an assessment and diagnosis; initiate review and revise treatment and therapy plans.
  • Order, transmit an order and/or assist in the performance for x-ray, therapeutic diets, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, laboratory procedures, screening procedures, therapeutic procedures and other studies.
  • Recognize and evaluate situations which call for immediate attention of a physician and institute, when necessary treatment procedures essential for the life of the patient.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health.  Counseling may include topics such as medications, diets, social habits, normal growth and development, aging and understanding of and long-term management of their diseases.
  • Initiate arrangements for admissions, complete forms and charts pertinent to the patient’s medical record and provide services to patient requiring continuing care, facilitating referral of patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies, and resources of the community including patients at home.
  • Initiate and Administer or provide medications to a patient or issue or transmit drug orders orally or in writing.
  • Assist physician with completion of task list to include return telephone calls, medication prescription refills, review lab and radiology studies, and prep for patient office visits.
  • Perform surgical procedures including the use of local anesthesia for the surgical procedure.
  • Act as first or second assistant in surgery under the supervision of approved supervising physician as well as performing venous procedures in office
  • Assist supervising physician with patient rounding routinely during weekdays and on weekends as needed.  These duties include initial assessment, documentation in the medical record, dictation of discharge summary, clarifying treatment and/or discharge planning.
  • Maintains productivity standard for number of patients seen.

 Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Experience: New Grad and/or entry level within an ambulatory care facility or medical group practice.

License / Certification:

  • Current PA license
  • Certification by the National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants for New Grads ONLY
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification
  • DEA License

Computer Skills: Basic computer skills in a Windows operating environment including Microsoft Word, Excel and an e-mail system.
