Roles and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist uses professional knowledge and judgment to perform technical, analytical, clerical and quality assurance functions within laboratory department sections as assigned.

Essential Duties

* Perform various chemical, microscopic, morphologic, microbiological and other tests as assigned, independently and in accordance with established procedures and policies.
* Evaluate the validity of results obtained; accurately record and report results.
* Perform quality control, standardization curves, calibration and equipment maintenance procedures as directed; recognize and report problems and document corrective action.
* Responsible for the completion of all procedures scheduled during the work shift and for maintaining a clean, neat and organized work area.
* Perform various technical and clerical tasks related to receiving, processing and/or obtaining specimens for laboratory analysis taking into consideration the age specific needs of the patient, as required.
* Demonstrate the ability to effectively use all computer equipment, programs and instrument interfaces related to operating functions in the division.
* Follow various federal and state laws, regulations and hospital/department guidelines with respect to licensure, safety, universal precautions, fire and emergency procedures, dress code, attendance, time cards and all other personnel policies.
* Participate in the Continuous Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs of the laboratory sections assigned and attend department meetings as directed.
* Maintain necessary records and prepare various reports, as requested.
* Keep abreast of advances in the field of Medical Technology and attend continuing education programs as appropriate.
* Assist in maintaining adequate inventory levels of supplies and reagents as directed.
* Participate in the teaching of trainees who rotate through the division, as assigned.
* May rotate or transfer to different areas of the laboratory, and/or work various hours due to variation in workload, staffing and training needs.
* Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs of the department/hospital as requested.
* Provide ongoing oversight and technical guidance to unlicensed laboratory staff assigned.
* May be as team leader/lead technologist during periods of time in which supervisory staff are not immediately available.


Bachelor's Degree required.


Valid California Clinical Laboratory Science license required.


Completion of 1 year approved internship program in Medical Technology. Prefer 3 years experience in multiple laboratory science disciplines as a licensed CLS/MT in an acute care facility.


This position requires adequate computer skills.
