Job Summary: Under the direction of the Clinic Laboratory Supervisor, the Clinical Lab Scientist uses professional knowledge and judgement to perform technical, analytical, clerical and quality assurance functions within laboratory department section(s) as assigned.

Essential Functions:

* Performs various chemical, microscopic, morphologic, microbiological and other tests as assigned, independently, and in accordance with established procedures and policies.
* Evaluates the validity of results obtained; accurately records and reports results.
* Performs quality control, standardization curves, calibration, and equipment maintenance procedures as directed; recognizes and reports problems and documents corrective action.
* Troubleshoot all analyzers for which training was provided.
* Responsible for the completion of all procedures scheduled during the work shift, and for maintaining a clean, neat and organized work area.
* Performs various technical and clerical tasks related to receiving, processing, and/or obtaining specimens for laboratory analysis, taking into consideration the age specific needs of the patient, as required.
* Follows various federal and state laws, regulations, and hospital/department guidelines with respect to licensure, safety, universal precautions, fire and emergency procedures, dress code, attendance, time cards and all other personnel policies.
* Maintains necessary records and prepares various reports, as requested.
* Keeps abreast of advances in the field of Medical Technology and attends continuing education programs as appropriate.
* Assists in maintaining adequate inventory levels of supplies and reagents, as directed.
* Participates in the teaching of trainees who rotate through the division, as assigned.
* Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs of the department/hospital as requested.
* Provides ongoing oversight and technical guidance to unlicensed laboratory staff, as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

* May rotate or transfer to different areas of the laboratory, and/or work various hours, due to variation in workload, staffing and training needs.
* May be assigned as team leader/lead technologist during periods of time in which supervisory staff are notimmediately available.
* Performs all other duties as assigned.

Age-Related Competencies:

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and evaluate testing as appropriate to the age of the patients served including knowledge of the principles of growth and development, and psychosocial characteristics and interventions for infant (0-1 year), child (1-5 years), school age (6-12 years), adolescent (13-17 years), young adult (18-45 years), middle adult (46-60 years), and older adult (60 years).

* Demonstrates age-related knowledge within the performance or oversight of phlebotomy procedure.
* Age-specific patient needs that employee is required to understand and meet:
* Additional requirements:Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills for the patient population served.
* Demonstrates age-specific knowledge of test result normal ranges, and is able to evaluate results in light of this knowledge.

Information Management: Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and security. Maintains all practices to protect PHI and follow HIPAA guidelines.

Lab, microbiology, histology, blood bank, reference lab and pathology technicians and staff shall have access to a patient's current and historical record of lab test results as necessary to provide ordered lab services. Lab managers may access complete medical record for assessment of patient in relation to laboratory procedure performed. Access to PHI shall be available only when the on duty and working.

Risk Management: Cooperates fully in all risk management activities and investigations.

Safety Requirements: Is knowledgeable of, observes and complies with hospital Codes of Safe Practice, safety policies and emergency procedures.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education:Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related science field required.

Experience: Completion of 1-year approved internship program in Medical Technology required.

License / Certification: Valid California Clinical Laboratory Science license.

Computer Skills: Basic computer skills and data entry.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

* Ability to effectively use all computer equipment, programs, and instrument interfaces related to operating functions in the division.
* Maintain a positive attitude with changing conditions.
* Requires good written and verbal communications skills to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
* Must be able to work under general supervision.
* Must have a professional and mature demeanor.
* Must be able to work in a fast-paced department and handle multiple tasks, work with interruptions, and deal effectively with confidential information.
* Must be able to read and interpret complex documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and correspondence.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: Three (3) years' experience in multiple laboratory science disciplines as licensed CLS/MT in acute care facility preferred.

Computer Skills: Advanced computer skills.
