Corporate Director Of Human Resources

Cowles Company, a fourth generation multi-state, family-owned enterprise that operates a portfolio of legacy companies including Print Media, Newsprint and Forestry, Broadcasting, Real Estate and Insurance is seeking our next Director of Human Resources.

The Director is responsible to visualize, develop and implement comprehensive written Human Resources procedures and best practices that are legally compliant and accurately
represent corporate and affiliate company polices to ensure full compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. The position reports to the President and has explicit responsibility and authority for compliance for all companies.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to work across company cultures, with a variety of Executives and Managers, to resolve difficult and complex human resources
management issues and the willingness to own responsibility for the continued development of a successful shared service HR department.

In this role the Director will manage all facets of a partially decentralized corporate human resources office responsible for recruitment, training, safety/accident prevention,
compensation, self-funded benefit and workers compensation plans, performance management, HRIS and payroll technology and integration.

Our ideal candidate will have all of the following:

• Strong foundation of HR functional knowledge and experience.
• Demonstrated experience applying knowledge and understanding of Federal, state and local human resource laws.
• Demonstrated experience pro-actively addressing issues that surface to mitigate risk to the company.
• Demonstrated experience researching, developing, recommending, and implementing HR policies and practices across all functional work areas to meet current and changing regulations and Company and goals.
• Experience responding to inquiries and complaints from federal and state regulatory agencies relating to employment practices.
• Strategic thinker and working hands-on manager.
• Experience managing a staff of Human Resources Professionals.
• Bachelor's degree in Business, HR, or related field.
• Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in human resources with at least 3 years at the Director level.
• Senior Professional in Human Resources or Society for Human Resource Management - Senior Certified Professional Certification in Human Resources or equivalency of experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who also have:

• Experience working with collective bargaining units including developing and negotiating union contracts and contributing as a member of the company's bargaining team.
• Experience utilizing technology and self-service to streamline employee communications and Human Resources services.
• Experience implementing Human Resources policies and practices in multiple states.
• Experience with online Learning Management systems.
