SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Smiths Detection Inc. is seeking a talented, quick learner. A motivated software engineer who has experience in software development and is looking to build a career in the field. As a software developer, you will be part of a team working on developing cutting edge web/mobile based tools that serve the business. You will also be working on developing tools for the state of the art Smiths Detection Inc's explosive detection systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Responsible for implementation and maintenance of Smiths Detection's web based business applications.
* Responsible for implementation and design of Ruby-on-Rails based libraries/applications.
* Contribute to the introduction and phasing in of new web technologies and methodologies into the development environment.
* Providing unit tests & documentation

Position Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Knowledge of web design development
* Experience with/Ability to learn web frameworks, specifically Ruby-on-Rails
* Experience with/Ability to learn frontend web technologies e.g. Javascript, Jquery, CSS , HTML
* Knowledge of relational database systems, such as PostgreSQL and SQLite
* Familiarity with software development process
* Experience in Linux/Unix, including build, debug & scripting tools
* Experience with publishing/consuming RESTful web services

Desired Characteristics:

* Experience with Ruby and the Ruby-on-Rails web development framework
* Ability and willingness to learn quickly. Strong communication skills.
* Familiarity with programming languages, build systems
* Familiarity with versioning tools, e.g. git
* Added bonus if familiar with cloud hosting/managed hosting

Eligibility Requirements:

* Must be 18 years or older.
* Must have at least 1 year experience in software development or relevant school projects/portfolios, and/or internships.
* Must be willing to take a drug test as part of the selection process. Must be willing to submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process
* Must be willing to submit to a government background investigation as part of the selection process.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
* Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States
* Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time.

Location: Newark, CA, Edgewood, MD, Alcoa, TN or Remote
