ShelterCare's Shankle program has designed a new unpaid undergraduate internship focusing on street outreach to Eugene and Springfield's homeless population. This internship will begin in Fall 2019.

The Street Outreach Intern will partner with staff to provide street outreach and survival supplies to chronically homeless adults with disabilities in Lane County. The Street Outreach Intern will work as part of a team with the Lead Outreach supervisor and learn the process for referring participants to other community resources. At the end of the internship, the student will walk away with front line experience in social services street outreach and collaborative partnership building in the community.


Street Outreach

* Locating and providing street outreach to homeless adults who are on the street, shelters, and or camps.
* Make contact and developing rapport with homeless adults .
* Connecting with public libraries, community businesses and other community services where homeless adults are frequently located.
* Providing homeless adults with necessary referrals and information for temporary housing and community resources.
* Maintain and interacting in a culturally sensitive, respectful, and professional demeanor.
* Collaborating with community partners as a part of a county-wide outreach project.
* Assist in daily tracking of interactions with adults and items distributed.

Community Outreach

* Maintain positive relationships with school, police, health providers, churches and other groups who might provide services or referrals to the Outreach Program.
* When directed by supervisor, collaborative outreach with police (CORT Team), HIV Alliance, or other service providers.
* Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

This is an unpaid internship lasting 1 - 2 terms. Flexible hours, Monday through Friday.

Candidates must be enrolled in a scholastic program receiving academic credit for the internship. Must be able to pass a DHS Background check.
