Job Description

We are seeking a strategic, business-minded and self-motivated attorney with 15 to 20 years of intellectual property experience to provide high quality legal advice and serve as a trusted strategic partner to a variety of internal teams. This position will assist in managing the company's intellectual property portfolio, including international patents, and will work closely with the company's product development teams.

This position reports directly to the General Counsel and is based in the company's corporate headquarters in Massachusetts (Attleboro).

* Key Roles and Responsibilities:
* Leading or assisting in all areas related to the company's legal requirements for its global patent and trademark portfolio
* Oversight of company USPTO legal compliance and processes
* Working closely with product development teams to ensure that sufficient ideas and Invention disclosures are generated; training and development of engineers on IP laws/requirements
* Ensuring that patent filings are of high quality on commercially significant inventions by working with research and development, business managers and marketing
* Overseeing the preparation of high quality patent applications, efficiently advancing prosecution of pending patent applications, and managing global patent portfolio to ensure that meaningful protection is obtained
* Working closely with product development teams to develop IP strategies using various types of IP to develop meaningful IP assets
* Drafting and negotiating IP-related agreements as well as IP specific terms in other agreements
* Working closely with other lawyers in addressing mixed intellectual property/general legal issues
* Working with the company's Patent Committee
* Providing leadership and legal advice in areas of expertise
* Managing, training and developing more junior IP attorney, paralegal
* Using a range of tools and data sources to understand the internal and external IP environment
* Collaborating with global legal colleagues and subject matters experts to advise the business on complex IP/legal issues that arise out of company's global operations
* Providing counsel and assisting with pre-litigation disputes and litigation involving the company's IP
* Supporting IP diligence in M&A
* Managing outside counsel and vendors in all appropriate areas of coverage to provide legal services in a cost-effective manner within budgetary expectations
* Assisting the legal department's efforts in the preparation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures relevant to areas of coverage
* Providing substantive support to other members of the legal department as needed
* Performing other special assignments, strategic projects or duties as needed

Job Requirements:

* J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school; mechanical or electrical engineering degree preferred
* Licensed to practice law and in good standing
* 15 or more years of intellectual property experience, including management of other attorneys
* Developed sense of judgment, risk management skills and ability to balance business needs, regulatory obligations and reputational risks in an objective, practical way; demonstrated ability to both grasp the "big picture" and attend to details
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced business environment and drive complex projects to completion
* Highly effective written and verbal communications skills; ability to communicate and relate at all levels of the organization
* Experience in-house and at a top-tier law firm is preferred
* Ability to handle substantial work volume and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
