The Opportunity
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a competent software developer with strong information security interest for our Software Engineer in Security Intern position. Candidate must be able to demonstrate programming ability and security competence. Does the following describe you?
I have experience writing code and enjoy writing robust code.
I enjoy finding bugs and spotting vulnerabilities.
I enjoy prototyping systems and using new technology.
I can effectively argue a stance in programming, security, or technical issues.
I enjoy reading about and can understand security vulnerabilities, breaches, attacks, or penetration techniques/tools.
I can read and understand technical papers and documentation.
The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer. If you are looking for an opportunity to apply classroom information security concepts in a professional work environment, this position is for you!

Software Engineer in Security Intern
Responsibilities:
Utilize security testing and penetration testing tools to find vulnerabilities
Develop security testing into a repeatable and automated process
Teach and train fellow engineers in security concepts and techniques
Write and maintain security-critical software and firmware
Review code and identify security issues
Threat Modelling - Review product/project designs in search of security vulnerabilities
Qualifications:
Current student pursuing a degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent with at least one year of technical coursework completed
Programming experience
Ability to research, learn, and apply security testing tools independently
Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
Clear understanding (breadth and depth) of vulnerabilities and security systems
Ability to advocate security best practices with firmness and graciousness
Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
Background check results satisfactory to SEL
Negative drug test result(s)
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer
Programming experience in safety-critical domains
Experience with vulnerability analysis techniques such as fuzzing and vulnerability scanning
Understanding of basic cryptography and cryptographic protocol concepts
Ability to read documentation and standards documents and understand new cryptographic protocols
Programming experience in C, C++, or Python
Experience with continuous integration
