Department Description:

The RF/Optoelectronics Department is responsible for the research and technology foundation of Group III-V compound semiconductors within the Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center that enables the creation, development and delivery of III-V based components addressing high-performance, harsh-environment communication, sensing and control problems. We work throughout the Technology Readiness Level range from TRL1 (basic principles observed and reported) to TRL6 (representative of the deliverable demonstrated in relevant environments), and partner as appropriate or required to assure the delivery of qualified products to our customers.

Our department focus in working from TRL3 (key elements demonstrated analytically or experimentally) to TRL4/5 (key elements demonstrated in a controlled/relevant environment) offers value to customers interested in the feasibility of proposed microtechnology or microsystems integration solutions to their problems, and to customers who need a trusted partner or supplier to create and deliver on stated performance, size, weight, power and cost benefits relative to alternatives. Meeting project milestone and delivery commitments are critical to success in our R&D business. Core department capabilities include optical, optoelectronic and electronic modeling and simulation; epitaxial design, growth and characterization; optical, optoelectronic and electronic device and circuit design, microfabrication and characterization; hybrid system design, assembly and prototype delivery; high-speed and rad-hard optoelectronics; high-power and rad-hard microelectronics; optical, optoelectronic and electronic device reliability.

Job Summary:

The selected candidate will engage in process development, fabrication, analysis, and characterization to perform and support state-of-the-art research, development, and maturation of high electron mobility transistors utilizing ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor materials. Success will be achieved through a combination of individual contributions and collaborations with other Sandia technical staff, typically in small, lean, multi-disciplinary project teams. This position will require owning, planning, executing, and documenting tasks that are linked to technical goals and milestones. Delivery on negotiated project commitments and all ownership responsibilities are critical. Technical activities may include: micro-fabrication, process development; design of experiments and analysis; Ohmic metal and Schottky contact development; and testing and correlating test results with device concepts and model predictions. Responsibilities will include reporting results through internal and external publications and presentations, and interfacing with stakeholders and customers to understand and meet requirements.


-- PhD degree in EE, Applied Physics, or related discipline.
-- Published record of original contributions in compound semiconductor (e.g., GaN, GaAlN, or other III-V materials) electronic devices.


-- Research background in wide bandgap semiconductor (e.g., GaN, AlGaN, SiC, etc.) electronic devices
-- Microfabrication skills (e.g. photolithography, thin film deposition and etch, etc.)
-- Strong interest in microelectronic devices and circuits
-- Knowledge of semiconductor and integrated circuit materials, fabrication, and devices
-- Experience with test and measurement equipment, interfacing, and data acquisition
-- Good communications and interpersonal skills
-- Excellent academic credentials

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.
