Job Description


This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to develop solutions for materials\-based hydrogen storage through a combination of modeling, synthesis and advanced characterization tools\.

On any given day, you will:

+ Participate on a main project where the aim is to provide a detailed mechanistic understanding of the fundamental processes and phenomena governing hydrogen uptake and release in solid\-state and liquid media\. A central theme in this effort is the rational design of new materials by changing the chemical composition, the arrangement of the atoms or molecules in various configurations, and elucidating the role of catalysts in activating chemical bonds in reversible hydrogen storage materials\.
+ Be part of a diverse team of scientists \(www\.hymarc\.org\) and expected to play a major role in synthesizing new hydrogen storage media, as well as advancing the structural and in\-situ characterization of these materials using state\-of\-the\-art X\-ray, neutron, and ion\-scattering techniques\.

You have:

+ A PhD in chemistry, materials science or related field with a strong emphasis on synthesis and characterization of new molecules and materials
+ Direct, hands\-on experience with handling air\-sensitive compounds including Schlenk line and glove\-box techniques
+ Experience with standard analytical techniques \(spectroscopy, diffraction, etc\.\)
+ A record of high technical achievement \(e\.g\. as evidenced by publication record\) and the ability to conduct creative, independent research will be given preference\.


You also have the following desired criteria:

+ Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
+ Advanced characterization techniques, such as neutron methods, soft X\-ray techniques, small\-angle X\-ray scattering, XPS, TEM, NMR, PCT/Sieverts, mass\-spectroscopy
+ Solid\-state and wet\-chemistry materials synthesis
+ Background in hetergeneous catalaysis

Department Description:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department is a research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications\. Projects and capabilities in the department's research portfolio include nanoporous materials \(such as Metal Organic Frameworks \(MOFs\) and porous inorganic materials\); materials for energy and hydrogen storage; thermoelectrics; and nanoscale materials characterization tools \(including extensive electron microscopy, single\-crystal and powder X\-ray diffraction, porosimetry, atomic force microscopy, and nanoindentation instrumentation\)\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\.
