:

We are seeking a Manager to lead the Advanced Capabilities for Pulsed Power Department 1659, which is within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center \(Center 1600\) at Sandia\. In this role, you will develop and guide teams conducting research within and developing new capabilities for state\-of\-the\-art pulsed\-power facilities\. This department conducts a variety of experiments on Z and other pulsed power facilities\. We develop and support emission spectroscopy on Z for a number of different research programs\. We are investigating the formation of electrode plasmas on Z that impact the performance and efficiency of coupling of current to pulsed\-power driven targets\. We develop new power flow and plasma diagnostics\. We maintain and operate SITF \(Systems Integration Testing Facility\) to develop subsystems for Z to a TRL of 6 prior to fielding on Z\. We are also developing and testing capabilities for Z experiments such as magnetic field coils for MagLIF \(one of the main ICF concepts being studied on Z\) and gas puff z\-pinches \(a mainstay of the survivability testing program\)\. Furthermore, we anticipate developing new systems for Z to provide in\-situ electrode cleaning to mitigate or eliminate contaminant plasma formation on electrodes, which are limiting the current coupling\. The principal goals of these activities are to improve the understanding of accelerator physics; apply the understanding to the development of advanced accelerator technology; use the capabilities and understanding to upgrade Z and other pulsed\-power machines; and establish the technical foundation upon which we will build next\-generation pulsed\-power accelerators in support of the U\.S\. Department of Energy’s national\-security mission\. In addition, you will play a key part in developing and mentoring current technical staff as well as the next generation of researchers in the field\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Manage physics experiments on the Z accelerator and other pulsed\-power machines
+ Manage emission spectroscopy diagnostics and measurements in support of a number of different programs
+ Manage the Systems Integration Test Facility
+ Manage efforts to develop power flow diagnostics
+ Manage efforts to improve the power\-flow performance and modeling of Sandia’s 85\-terawatt 26\-megampere Z accelerator for short\- and long\-pulse experiments
+ Manage the development of the vacuum\-power\-flow technical basis for next generation pulsed power concepts
+ Support upgrades to the Z accelerator
+ Recruit and hire technical staff members and technologists
+ Develop and mentor personnel
+ Manage publication of results in premier peer\-reviewed physics and engineering journals

The experimental component of the work outlined above will be conducted in pulsed\-power laboratory environments, and will involve hazards that include, but are not limited to, the following: high voltage, high current, high\-energy capacitors, high\-power lasers, x\-ray radiation, neutron radiation, radioactive materials \(such as tritium and activated stainless steel\), nuclear materials \(such as plutonium and uranium\), beryllium, high gas pressures, vacuum systems, chemical explosives, explosive gases \(such as hydrogen\), asphyxiating gases \(such as sulfur hexafluoride, nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen\), cryogenic systems, toxic chemicals, chemical solvents, elevated work platforms, ladders, confined spaces, large and heavy pieces of equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, open water tanks, open oil tanks, powered hand tools, disk grinders, and manual tools\.

Required:

+ Bachelor’s in engineering, physics, or a related field
+ Master’s or PhD in engineering, physics, or a related field
+ Eight years’ experience, including experience in the field of pulsed power accelerator physics
+ Publication record that includes peer\-reviewed journal articles in engineering, physics, or a related field
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U\.S\. Department of Energy Q\-level security clearance

Department Description:

The Advanced Capabilities for Pulsed Power Department develops the world's most advanced pulsed\-power\-accelerator technology\. We apply the technology to the development of superpower accelerators; i\.e\., those that deliver a multi\-terawatt electromagnetic pulse to a physics package that serves as the load of the accelerator\. Various types of loads are fielded by the user community, who conduct inertial\-confinement\-fusion, material\-physics, weapon\-effects, radiation\-physics, laboratory\-astrophysics, and other high\-energy\-density\-physics experiments in support of a wide variety of U\.S\. Department of Energy \(DOE\) programs\.

We conduct high energy density physics and accelerator physics experiments on Sandia's Z machine, which generates an 85¿terawatt 26\-megampere 100\-nanosecond electrical\-power pulse\. We also conduct experiments on a number of other pulsed\-power machines with peak electrical powers that range from 5 gigawatts to 500 gigawatts\. The experiments are establishing the technical foundation that will be necessary to develop next\-generation pulsed\-power accelerators\. We are supporting obtaining data for a number of critical stockpile stewardship programs\.
