Job Description

:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct quantum information science research\. Are you passionate about designing new types of quantum algorithms to leverage near\-term quantum resources? Are you seeking an opportunity to work under the mentorship of and in collaboration with accomplished experts in these fields? If so, consider applying for this opportunity\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Design novel quantum algorithms for discrete optimization, machine learning, simulation, and other application areas
+ Conduct research drawing on expertise in classical approaches to discrete optimization, approximation algorithms, or more general theoretical computer science
+ Work in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment with physicists, computer scientists, and mathematicians to develop theoretical and practical approaches for solving real\-world problems arising at Sandia
+ Publish results in relevant journals and present at conferences

Required:

+ PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering or related discipline
+ Experience with programming language such as C/C\+\+ or Python
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

Desired:

+ Experience in quantum algorithm design, quantum complexity theory, adiabatic quantum computing theory, quantum information theory, or quantum error correction
+ Interdisciplinary background with expertise in classical discrete optimization, machine learning, or theoretical computer science
+ Willingness to work in a collaborative team environment and interested in interdisciplinary research
+ Experience making effective technical presentations

Department Description:

Sandia’s Quantum Algorithms for Optimization and Learning and Simulation \(QOALAS\) team is a DOE\-funded effort to develop new quantum algorithms for optimization, machine learning, and quantum simulation, bringing together a diverse team of quantum information scientists and computer scientists from Caltech, Los Alamos Lab, and The University of Maryland\. More broadly, the Discrete Math and Optimization Department conducts research and develops mathematics and computing in support of Sandia missions\. Principle areas of focus include graph algorithms, parallel computing, combinatorial optimization, integer programming, and quantum algorithms\. Our team delivers creative enabling technologies and software tools\. The department works on a wide variety of application areas including scientific computing, systems software, logistics and sensor placement\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
