We are seeking a Intern Year Round \- R&D Grad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop and apply multi\-species kinetic models to the study of plasma transport in high energy density environments
+ Develop multi\-scale methods that incorporate machine learning techniques for computation of collision rates
+ Develop high order methods for kinetic equations
+ Develop scalable implicit\-explicit time integration schemes
+ Collaborate with theoretical and experimental groups at Sandia National Laboratories
+ Use high performance computing resources extensively


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Enrollment in a Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related PhD\. Program
+ Experience with methods such as molecular dynamics, particle\-in\-cell
+ Experience with writing, analyzing, or running scientific simulation codes on massively parallel computing platforms
+ Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills and a proven record of success in independent research as evidenced through technical publications and reports
+ Demonstrated ability to be self\-motivated and to work effectively with others as part of a team


+ An interest and ability to perform a variety of plasma physics simulations using a range of computational techniques
+ Knowledge of plasma physics and strongly coupled plasmas
+ Interest in high\-energy density physics theory
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\) security clearance

Department Description:

Research within the High Energy Density Physics \(HEDP\) Theory Department 1641 spans a broad range of topics with a common theme of gaining an improved understanding of materials at normal as well as extreme conditions of high densities and/or temperatures, pressures, magnetic fields, and rapidly changing states\. Major efforts of the department include developing simulations codes and high\-fidelity material models together with designing dynamic material and plasma physics experiments for Sandia's Z Machine\. Our research has both applied and fundamental dimensions – for example in the areas of electronic structure, shock physics, material science, planetary science and astrophysics\.

More specifically, work at the department involves fundamental research in materials\- and plasma physics: i\) developing and applying methods based on quantum mechanics, primarily Density Functional Theory and quantum Monte Carlo, for developing both an improved understanding and quantitative models for materials properties; ii\) developing magneto\-hydrodynamics simulation codes and applying them to study plasma physics designing Z experiments; and iii\) using and employing hybrid plasma simulation codes to study Electromagnetic Pulse \(EMP\) effects and laser\-matter interactions\.

Current research areas include Dynamic Material properties/NNSA Science Campaigns, Quantum Monte Carlo within Basic Energy Sciences/DOE Office of Science, Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development \(LDRD\), Advanced Simulation and Computing \(ASC\), and the program for fundamental science experiments on the Z machine\. The department has active collaborations with research groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory as well as with academic institutions in the US and in Europe, for example the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Harvard University, the University of Rostock in Germany, Princeton University, Cornell University, Carnegie Institution of Washington, North Carolina State University, and Michigan State University\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.
