Job Description

:

The Weapon Electrical Modeling department is seeking an advanced\-degree level candidate to conduct electromagnetic analyses in support of multiple customers on challenging technical issues associated with coupling into and response of systems, facility protection, and personnel hazards\. Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility \(EMC\) principles and their implementation in design and testing is advantageous\.

Typical projects consist of requirements consultation, system response, facility protection analysis, supporting system and component design decisions, and/or evaluating anomalous results due to electromagnetic environments\. Environments include CW and pulsed sources, including lightning and electrostatic discharge\. The candidate will be expected to engage with customers and other analysts or experimentalists to understand requirements, frame problems appropriately, choose and execute solution methods, and communicate results to customers\. The candidate is expected to provide as well as to accept critical peer reviews of analyses to ensure technically accurate results are provided to the customer\. At times, the candidate will provide briefings and/or training to customers\.

Key to the success of this position is an ability to balance both a deep technical understanding of the underpinning physics with clarity of communication and responsiveness\. On\-the\-job training will be provided to understand specific customer needs\. Minimal travel is required\.

Required:

+ An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related science and engineering field, to include graduate electromagnetic coursework

Desired:

+ Ph\.D\. in Electrical Engineering with a focus in electromagnetics
+ High level of academic success in both undergraduate and graduate programs
+ Experience and ability to solve technical problems both analytically and computationally\.
+ Knowledge of lightning phenomenology and/or other electrical hazards and consequences such as from facility power systems and electrostatic discharge\.
+ Experience with industry EM modeling tools \(CST, COMSOL, ANSYS\), circuit modeling tools \(Mentor Graphics, Cadence\), and computational and numerical analysis tools \(Matlab, C\+\+, Python, etc\.\)\.
+ Working knowledge of or familiarity with:

- Lightning protection,
- Electro\-explosive device \(EED\) designs, hazards, and safety requirements,
- DOE and DoD orders, rules, and standards associated with critical operations and facilities
- Familiarity with MIL\-STD\-461 and associated laboratory tests

Department Description:

We analyze complex electrical circuit behavior for a variety of performance, safety, sensitivity, aging, or environmental issues\. We work with multiple teams, mostly internal to Sandia, responsible for designing or maintaining electrical components or subsystems of high consequence systems\. Our staff is comprised mainly of Master's\-level and PhD\-level electrical engineers who use modeling and simulation to assure that electrical system designs and products meet stringent requirements that include temperature extremes and radiation environments\. In certain cases, we investigate why these systems deviate from expected behavior or requirements\. Our analysis capability includes the effects of electromagnetic environments, such as lightning, electrostatic discharge, and electromagnetic radiation \(EMR\), on the safety and performance of complex systems, including facilities\.
